Silverthorn Family Stories and Traditions: Recollections by: William L Baran
Indian Story: Maud (Carroll) Silverthorn was in the kitchen of their homestead in ND near the Ft. Totten Indian Reservation. When she turned around she saw an Indian standing there. It was Chief White Cloud who with sign language indicated that he wanted a match for his pipe. She gave it to him and he left. Grandmother was very scared and related this story many times when I was a young boy. ("The scared" may have been due to what she had heard as a child from the Carrolls and Barr who had lost a lot of family to the Indian uprising in PA.)
Tin Cup Story: A tin cup was always at the kitchen sink for a good cold drink of water. This was probably a carry over from the farm. The cup is still present in my mothers home. (Dorothy Pearl Silverthorn Baran)Ghost Encounter: An interesting story related by daughter Dorothy Pearl Silverthorn Baran. On wedding night Harry woke up and saw a figure standing at the bottom of the bed. She said that he was to "be good to Maud and take care of her". He later described the clothing that she wore and it was the same as Maud's mother Annette Barr Carroll had been buried in.
