In 1327 the Siverthorn(e) family is found in England. There are two stories of how the surname was chosen. The first story; Silverthorn(e) was an ancient and honorable Anglo-Saxon lineage, the name appears to have originated from "Dweller by the silver (or white) hawthorn tree."
The second story was when Joseph of Aramathea, who was credited with having found the first Christian Church of England when he and the eleven disciples went there after the death of Christ to spread the gospel to the heathen Gauls inhabiting the island. The natives they encountered at first had not molested them, but later when they seemed threatening, Joseph planted his staff in the earth when he knelt to pray. Upon arising, he beheld a miracle, for his old staff on which he had often leaned during the long journey from Nazareth, was suddenly covered with green leaves and sweet smelling blossoms. The tree that grew from it became known as the Holy Thorn of Glastonbury and flourish the hed in the country there about, blooming every Christmas and spring. Centuries later when families were required to choose surnames, this family chose Silvertorn to be known by thereafter. Their crest, "dweller by the Silver Hawthorn Tree, is a white dove with wings extended over a sheaf of barley. The motto being "Truth Feareth Nothing."
The line from which our family descends begins with Anthony Silverthorne Sr. born in 1585, was married 27 November 1620 to Rachel Parker. He died in June of 1665. Nothing on Rachel's death.
His son Anthony Silverthorne (the younger) was born 1623 at West Ashton, Wiltshire, England, married 1650 or 1652 to Sarah Long, the daughter of John Long and Catherine Bushell. Anthony died September 1696 at Netheravon, Wiltshire, England. Nothing on Sarah's death.
Anthony and Sarah had five children: Nathaniel born 1654 married Martha Arthur, Oliver born 1656 married Margaret Mist, Anthony born 1658 married Mary Bown, Charles born 1660 married Margaret Sheppard, An married William Frippe.
Oliver Silverthorne Sr. was born 1656 at Netheravon, Wiltshire, England, married Margaret Mist the daughter of Henry and Winifred Mist on 21 September 1685 at Amesbury, England she being born 1661 at Amesbury, Wiltshire, England, baptized 15 April 1661. Oliver was buried at the Parish Churchyard of All Saints, Netheravon, Wiltshire, England, January 1686. He was a wheelwright. Nothing on Margaret's death.
Oliver Silverthorne Jr. was born July 1686 being baptized 1 August 1686 at Wiltshire, England. He married Mary (maiden name unknown) 1710 at Amesbury Parish Church in England. He was a yeoman and cooper. He and his wife came to the United States in 1735 with four sons, William, George, Thomas and John. Oliver died 1746 Bethlehem township Hunterdon Co. NJ.
William Silverthorn was born 1726 in England; married Mary (name unknown) in 1750. They had seven children: Oliver born 1754, Mary born 1756, John born 1758, Henry born 1760, Sarah and Susannah bor 12 Jan 1765 and William born 1764. His second wife was Mrs. Mary Young whom he married 1779 at Lebanon Township, Hunterdon Co. N.J. They had three children; Thomas 1780, Anna 20 Feb. 1782 and Elizabeth 17 April 1785. All of the children were born in Bethlehem township, NJ. William died 26 Aug 1795 at Bethlehem Township, Hunterdon Co., NJ. Nothing on Mary's death.
John Silverthorn was born 1758 at Bethlehem township, Hunterdon Co., Jersey. He was a farmer and yeoman. August 1775, John enlisted in Capt. Sherrod's Company and served in Col. Bonnell's Regiment and on 27 August 1776 fought in the battle of Long Island in New York. He married Sarah Susan Okeson 1778 at Bethlehem township, Hunterdon Co., the daughter of Daniel Okeson and Anglechea Albertson. Daniel and Anglechea were married 11 February 1748-49 in Bethlehem township Hunterdon Co., NJ. Their daughter Nancy Ann married William Silverthorn and son, Nicholas Albertson married Susannah Silverthorn. John and Susan were the parents of seven children: John Jr. born 1782, Oliver born 4 January 1786 both in Bethlehem township, Hunterdon Co., NJ. Nicholas born 12 May 1787, William 13 February 1789, Daniel and Sarah 10 October 1790 and Gabriel born 1795 all in Milford township, Mifflin Co. PA. Susan was born 1 February 1753 and died 7 August 1806 Milford ship, Mifflin Co. PA. John died 183? at Knowlton township, Sussex Co., NJ.
William Silverthorn was born 13 February 1789, Milford township, Mifflin-Juanita Co. PA (Tuscarora Valley]. He married Margaret Oakes, 23 August 1807 by the Rev. John Cook in Hagerstown, Washington Co. MD . Margaret was born 1790 at Washington Co. MD . They were the parents of nine children: Mary Ann (23 Oct. 1808-23 April 1900), John Oliver (6 Oct. 1810-14 Feb. 1889), Effie (19 Jan. 1813-7 July 18 Sept. 1816-1899), Sarah Jane (12 March 1818-12 June 1880), Thomas (3 April 1820-14 Nov. 1889), Elizabeth ( 8 April 1822-16 June 1894), Margaret (19 July 1824-1898), and David Oliver (9 June 1827 no death date). William died 1827 and Maragret 1834 Springfield Township, Muskingum Co., Zanesville Ohio.
John Oliver Silverthorn was born 6 Oct. 1810 Hancock Township, Washington Co. MD and died 14 Feb. 1889 in Oskaloosa, IA. In 1817 his family moved from MD to Zanesville Ohio. John met and married Mary Burwell, daughter of John Burwell and Violette Luse "Luce" on 1 January 1835 at Zanesville, Muskingum Co OH. Mary was born 24 Jan 1815 at Sussex Co., NJ and died 12 May 1894 in White Oak Township, Mahaska Co. IA. Both are buried at White Oak Cemetery.
On coming to IA John purchased land in White Oak Township, in Section 20 on November 1851 Patent was on 1 Nov. 1852. He also purchased land in Section 18 Patent 1November 1852.
They were the parents of ten children the first seven being born in Ohio and three in White Oak Twp., Mahaska Co., IA.

3. William Nelson (11Oct. 1840- 10 Jan. 1906) was married to Sophia Stolzer, daughter of Nicholas Stolzer and Sophia Shoe on 25 August 1863, by the Rev. Joshua Robinson in Oskaloosa, Mahaska Co., IA. Sophia was born 18 April 1845 in Baden, Germany and died in Chicago, IL 7 April 1923. William enlisted 15 July 1861 and served under Capt. B.K. Smith, fought in the battles of Ft. Donelson 13,14,15 February 1862 and Pittsburgh Landing 6 April 1862. Their company was called "The Hornets." Disabled and honorably discharged I I August 1862, Camp Montgomery at Corinth, MS. Was discharged for chronic diarrhea from exposure and lack of food on march from Ironton, MO to Cape Gerardeau, MO, October of 1861. Contacted pleurisy 1July 1862 on march from Corinth, MS to Burnsville and return. Personal belongings: Knights of Pythias Charm and GAR Ribbons. He served in Company "C" 7th Regiment, IA Infantry Volunteers, as private. He was a farmer, coal miner and carpenter, a member of the Phil Kearney Post GAR of Oskaloosa, IA and a 25 year member of the Knights of Pythias, Headlight Lodge No. 112 of Beacon, IA. Sophia and William were the parents of eight children:
1. Mary Emma Silverthorn (15 Feb. 1865-17 March 1947) married Tom Morrish in 1884. They were the parents of two sons.

2. Rebecca Silverthorn (19 Aug. 1866-12 Sept. 1866).

3. Charles Elmer Silverthorn (6 Nov. 1870-16 April 1906). Married Margaret E. Bucknell 31 March 1894. They were the parents of five children. Winnie (22 Sept. 1895-1 Dec. 1895), Caroline "Lynn" was born 13 Feb. 1897, no death date. Charles E. born 10 March 1899, died same day. Wesie Agatha (11 May 1901- 5 July 1904) and Glen Raymond 17 June 1905.

4. Violette "Lette" Silverthorn (28 Sept. 1872-28 Aug. 1961). Married 22 Sept. 1902 to Ross McCormick, no children. Lived in Chicago, IL

5. William B. Silverthorn (12 Sept. 1872-22 March 1847). First marriage 22 Sept. 1902 to Katherine McPherson, one child, Katherine. Second marriage Kate Jewell.

6. Carrie Silverthorn (30 Sept. 1880-20 Oct. 1880).

7. Harry A. Silverthorn twin of Carrie (30 Sept. 1880-16 Feb. 1946). Married Maud Carroll 20 Feb. 1900. Four girls, Annette, Janette, Harriet and Dorothy Pearl. Harry was an undertaker in Chicago, IL.

8. Verne F. "Tine" Silverthorn (5 June 1886- 1942). Married Hattie Moore, divorced, no children.

4. Catherine Silverthorn (4 Jan. 1843-13 Jan. 1845).

5. George Oliver Silverthorn (5 March 1845- 26 Oct. 1918). Married 5 June 1875 to Sarah Hayes, one step-son Milan Hayes. In 1885 he carried the mail between Rose Hill and Indianapolis, IA and ran a saw mill for several years at Spring Valley. He was always an active man, industrious and resourceful. He was a builder and contractor of prominence in his time and erected many of the best barns in the northeast section of Mahaska Co.. In 1902 he became a member of Leola Lodge I.O.O.F. at What Cheer, transferring to the Spring Valley Lodge in 1909.

6. Stephen Burwell Silverthorn (26 Sept. 1847-22 Sept. 1891 of typhoid fever). On 9 Feb. 1871 he married Frances J. Smith, no children.

7. Margaret Ellen Silverthorn (14 Nov. 1850- 26 Dec. 1941). Married 12 Feb. 1878 in Oskaloosa, IA to Chester Elmer Fleming (23 March 1857-10 Aug. 1893), son of John J. and Hannah M. Mills Fleming. They had three children:
1. Daisy Ethel Fleming (12 Oct. 1878-3 Sept. 1958). Married 9 March 1894 to Warren Arnold LaFollette (18 Dec. 1874-25 June 1915). They had four children.
1.John Wayne LaFollette born 30 June 1894. On 7 Nov. 1914 he married Laura Morgan. Their children: Arnold 5 Nov. 1915, Edith (28 Feb. 1917-7 Feb. 1920), Clifford 13 April 1920 and Dorothy 25 June 1921.
2. Jesse Elmer LaFollette born 2 March 1898, married Mabel, no children.
3. Margaret Katherine LaFollette born 17 June 1905. Married Elmer Broadsack. Their children: Donald 6 July 1924 and Robert LaFollette 12 Feb. 1927.
4. Martha Isabel LaFollette born 16 June 1913. Married Dick Tolles.
2. Ernest Fleming (12 Sept. 1880-27 March 1882).
3. Pearl Katherine Fleming (29 April 1883-25 Nov. 1927). Married 24 Oct. 1903 in Oskaloosa, IA to William Edward Barnhill (10 Oct. 1876-11 Nov. 1944). They had three children. Harold Elmer (28 Jan. 1905-23 Feb. 1905). Leslie Edward Barnhill born 5 Feb. 1907. Married Mae Scott, their daughter Evelyn Maxine born 19 Jan. 1924. Maxine Alberta Barnhill was born 15 Dec. 1910. Married 23 Sept. 1929 to Wynne Dalton Everman (18 April 1907-20 Oct. 1983). Their children: Shirley Kay born 6 July 1932, married 3 Aug. 1952 to L. Everitt Lester born 2 Aug. 1924. Jerry Edward Everman born 28 May 1935. Married 12 Jan. 1963 to Martha Ann Hix born 22 Jan. 1943.
8. Margianna "Margery Ann" Silverthorn (27 June 1856-7 July 1923) on 2 July 1874 married Sam J. Smith. They had six children:

1. Lillis Smith born 11 April 1876, married Wm. Schultz divorced, 2nd Isaac B. Perry 9 June 1904, one child, Bertha Perry.
2. Nellie Smith (21 May 1878-12 June 1879).
3. Frank Smith (7 Jan. 1883-12 Jan. 1889 died of diphtheria).
4. Vera Smith born 30 Nov. 1885, married Everett Garrett divorced, married Thomas James Haughey divorced, married John Lake.
5. Gail Smith born 31 Aug. 1890, married Jessie Francis McIntire, 6 Nov. 1920.
6. Roscoe F. Smith born 25 Oct. 1890. Married Eva Beach 6 Sept. 191?. She had one daughter.
9. Mary Jane Silverthorn (26 Nov. 1857-18 March 1927). She married 25 June 1874 to Harvey Clark Little born 23 April 1847. They had seven children.

1. Cora Little (24 Sept. 1875-26 Sept. 1875).
2. Allie Little (17 Feb. 1877-18 May 1877).
3. Nellie Little born 17 Feb. 1877, twin of Allie. She married Barton Chadsey Harmon 17 Feb. 1897. They had three children:
1. Homer C. Harmon (29 Dec. 1897-Oct. 1965). Married Grace Wymore (1 April 1905-31 July 1955). They had five daughters, Mary Jane, Lucille, Lila, Carol and one son Larry.
2. Mary Edith Harmon (I April 1905-winter 1981. -Married. Arthur Rogers 2 April 1920 divorced. Walter Bradshaw 4 Oct. 1922 divorced.
3. Glen Oliver Harmon born 30 May 1911, married Hazel DeJong 23 Dec. 1932.
4. Walter Little (7 Feb. 1879-24 Feb. 1879).
5. Homer A. Little born 3 Feb. 1881 -no death date. Married Laura Hoover, she had one daughter by a previous marriage. They later divorced. Homer was a night watchman for many years for the city of Oskaloosa.
6. Oliver Little (25 Jan. 1883-28 Sept. 1890).
7. Baby stillborn no sex. June 1889.

10. Martha Effie Silverthorn (17 Nov. 1861-30 Dec. 1920). On 4 Nov. 1883 married George F. Smith (27 May 1854-14 Feb. 1925), the son of Jesse M. and Elizabeth Jane Baker Smith. Effie and Frank had two children:
1. Edith Burwell Smith (30 Nov. 1888-no death date). On 3 April 1925 married E.L. Gilchrist. They had no children, but he had two sons by a previous marriage, W.G. and Ralph T.
2. Edgar Ray Smith (11 March 1894-no death date). Married Mabel Snodgrass Wilkinson. She had one daughter killed in a car accident, so was raising her granddaughter, Sherry. Mabel died in Ottumwa, IA 1980. Edgar served in the first World War and was an undertaker in Ottumwa.

Three Silverthorn brothers were the chums of the poet Robert Browning, one of them being a witness to Browning's marriage to Elizabeth Barrett and one to whom he dedicated the memorial poem "May and Death" 1852, when James Silverthorn died.
The family is famous for inventions, including the once-popular copper toe for boots (invented 1862 by Newmon Silverthorn). One Willis C. Silverthorn ran for governor of WI in 1896. Until 1917 the Silverthorn Inn, famous for 107 years at Rocky River Ohio, was widely known by tourists and traveling men, finally having been displaced by the Miramer Hotel.
A family reunion was held in 1929 in Rossville Ohio with many states and Canada represented. The tables were decorated in red, white and blue banners with the American flag and the Union Jack there on.
