Eells Family Book 1633-1952
Pg 166, James Eells was born in Peru NY, and settled first in Hanover NY then Perrysburg from which place in the spring of 1834, he decided to seek his fortune in the West. He started overland to Buffalo, accompanied by his wife and children, and then proceeded by Lake Erie to Detroit, then to IL with teams. Their outfit consisted of two horses and a wagon and they carried their provisions with them, camping and cooking by the wayside and sleeping in the wagon by night. They first halted on the line of LaSalle and Putnam counties. After a few months, accompanied by Hubbard Graves, James Eells came to Stephenson Co. He returned for his family and arrived with them in April 1835. He entered a claim in what is now Winslow Twp. He kept the first hotel in Stephenson Co., which was a log cabin, and in it was held the first election in the Co.. His first wife was Harriet Gaylord, who died in Perrysburg NY at the age of 28, and his second wife was Maria Tull, who died in Spring Valley, MN, in 1860.
