THE FIRST GENERATION
Line of descent possibly from John Eells, Piltdown, Devonshire.
1.1.2. John Eells, Dorchester MA.
He came from England (presumably Barnstable) and appears in the records of Dorchester MA from 1633 to 1640, at which time, on the 28th of the eighth month he sold out and returned to Barnstable, Devonshire, England, taking with him his infant son Samuel. When he came to America is uncertain. In the Eells Family prepared by J. J. Goodwin, is the following: 'On the Dorchester Town Records under date of 6th of January Monday 1633 is found this entry; Item: It is ordered that Mr. Hill shall have that pr'cell of ground adjoining to his former lott, between it and John Iles, (pg. 95, Taken from Boston Record Commissioner Reports Vol. 4, p. 5). Hence Mr. Goodwin entitles his book, 'The Eells Family 1633-1821."According to the same authority, John Eales appears in the list of freemen made at the General Court May 14, 1634 and, as an order has been issued by the General Court of MA Bay that May 18, 1631 none but members of some of the churches within its jurisdiction should become freemen it is evident that he was a member of one of its churches and without much doubt it was the one at Dorchester. Mr. Goodwin devotes seven and a half pages to this one man, much of which is quotations from records between 1633 and 1640 which mention the name of John Iles, Eales, or Eells. A paper furnished by MS Louise C. Eells of Davenport, IA, states that John Eells came to America about 1628 and dwelt at Dorchester, Fox Point. When John Eells was born, to whom married and when he died are all uncertain. If, however, the John Eells of Pilton, whose will is recorded in the Archdeaconry Court of Barnstable, Devonshire was the same, he lived at least until September 5, 1662 when the will was dated. and died before some date later in 1663 when the will was proved, the rest of the dates being illegible. If this is John Eells, his wife's name was Mary. If also the John Eells spoken of as possibly his son was really so, he must have been married as early as 1618-hence in 1663 he would have been probably 65 years old. As the 'Eells Family" is now out of print, and the copyright expired, I will quote what it says about the first generation, for the benefit of readers of this book, in the Appendix.
