Ribbons belonged to William N Silverthorn and worn to a convention in Oskaloosa, IA Sept. 12, 1888. The company he was in during the war, was called the Hornets. His unit was in the Battle of Gettysburg, Missionary Ridge, and the Battle of the Clouds on Lookout Mt. Chattanooga, TN. He was not with them since he had been disabled in 1862. This information was given to me by Mrs. Ross McCormick known to me as Aunt Lette. Compiled by Dr. William L. Baran 1980.

Beacon IA is west of Oskaloosa about 3 miles. It was a big town until the mine played out. I found an old resident who remembered "Old Lady Silverthorn" I could not find the home of William N. and Sophia Silverthorn as shown in the photo's. It was there but the porch has been removed. The lady thought she knew where it was and that a family by the name of Sylvester was living there. The railroad tressel that Dorothy Pearl Silverthorn Baran remembered as a child was gone.

Text: Death Notice: Silverthorn William N. was born in Zanesville Ohio, October 11, 1840. He came with his parents to IA in 1851. When the Civil War broke out in 1861 he enlisted in Co. C 7th IA infantry
, but one year later, owing to sickness he received an honorable discharge. In 1863 he was married to MS Sophia Stolzer. His home has been in and near Beacon for more than half a century. On December 22, 1905, he underwent a surgical operation which seemingly was successful but on New Years night he became worse and continued as a great sufferer with pneumonia for ten days. Loving hands did all that could be done but on Wednesday morning January 10, he quietly fell asleep in Jesus and life'e sufferings were o'er, aged 65 years, and three months. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias order for the past 25 years, also a member of the G. A. R. post, which company he greatly enjoyed being his comrades- the "boys" he called them. He leaves behind him to mourn their loss a wife, two daughters - Mrs Emma Morrish of Beacon and Mrs Ross McCormick of Oskaloosa- and four sons- Charles Silverthorn of Bussey, William B and HArry Silverthorn of ND, and Verne Silverthorn who is still at home with his mother. Besides these he leaves four sisters, one brother and a host of friends.
We the undersign, hereby tender our heartfelt thanks to the K of P lodge of Beacon, the G. A. R. Post of Oskaloosa and the innumerable friends of the late Wm N. Silverthorn for their kind and libera l asistance rendered during his sickness and our bereavemant. Mrs. Sophia Silverthorn, Mrs Emma Morrish, Charles Silverthorn, Mrs. Ross McCormick, WM B Silverthorn, Harry Silverthorn, Verne Silverthorn Beacon, IA Jan. 14, 1906
