4. Joseph (2) Waterman (Robert 1), born at Marshfield MA about 1649, died there 3 Jan. 1711, aged 62 (gravestone); married (Probably at Marshfield) Sarah Snow, born about June 1651, died Marshfield, 11 Sept 1741, aged 90 yrs, 3 mons. (gravestone), daughter of Anthony and Abigail (Warren) Snow, and granddaughter of Richard Warren of the Mayflower.
On 1 Apr. 1689, Joseph Waterman made an exchange of reality with Samuel Little, acquiring the dwelling house belonged to Josiah Winslow dec'd (The Mayflower Descendant, 32-33)
When the General Court, 16 Sept. 1673, ordered that four troopers be raised in Marshfield, Joseph Waterman volunteered.
Joseph Waterman's will, made 6 Aug. 1709, proved 12 Mar. 1710/11, is given in full in The Mayflower Descendant, 24-145 to 149. He named his wife Sarah; sons Joseph and Anthony; Joseph Ryder, my sister's son which I have brought up; sons Joseph Waterman and Kenelm Winslow; daughters Sarah Hewett, Elizabeth Bartlett deceased, Abigail Winslow, Bethiah and Lidia; and Mary Okesman which I have brought up. (Probate Rec. Plymouth Co., 3-33, 34; inventory, p. 37.)
The Co. of Plymouth was debtor to Joseph Waterman, 15 shillings, June 1671. He served on a jury, 3 July 1679. On 1 June 1680, his name appears with that of Joseph Bumpas as the Constables of Marshfield. He was a member of the Grand Inquest, 3 June 1684. On 25 Feb. 1684/5, he served on a coroner's jury which found that Joseph Trewant and Israell Holmes of Marshfield came to their death "by the desposing hand of Gods providence, & the extreemety of the weather and the couldnes of the same."
On 2 June 1685, he was named with Ralph Powell as "Surueighors" of Marshfield. On 3 June 1690, Ephraim Little, John Foster, and Joseph Waterman were named as the selectmen of Marshfield. [N. B. Shurtleff. Records of the Colony of New Plymouth, 6-35, 128, 148, 167, 241; 7-217; 8-133.)
Both a printed and a photographic copy of the will of Anthony Snow, father of Sarah, who died at Marshfield in August, 1692, will be found in "The Mayflower Descendantt, 5-1."
Joseph Waterman called himself "house carpenter" of Marshfield in a deed, 25 June 1688, to John Foord of Marshfield, boatman; also in a deed, 20 June 1681, to John Sherman of Marshfield. The latter was witnessed by John Waterman and Samuel Sprague, and Joseph Waterman's wife Sarah acknowledged the deed. Joseph exchanged land in Marshfield with Samuel Little, 1 Apr. 1689. He conveyed, 16 Mar. 1701/2, to Samuel Samson of Duxbury. On 13 Jan. 1699, Joseph Waterman of Marshfield, yeoman, "for and in consideration of a marriage lately Had and Consumated Between Sollomon Hewett of Marshfield aforesaid and Sarah Waterman daughter of ye said Joseph Waterman and for ye naturall Love & affection," etc., conveyed 80 acres in Marshfield to Solomon and Sarah Hewitt; witnesses, Elizabeth Thomas, Mary Thomas. Mr. Joseph Waterman, Kenelm Winslow and Ichabod Bartlett, all of Marshfield, conveyed 4 Apr. 1710 to Nathaniel Thomas of Marshfield; witnesses, Isaac Thomas, Abigail Thomas, John Magoon, Elias Magoon. Mr. Joseph Waterman of Marshfield, "in consideration of the Naturall Love & affection which I Bare to my Son Anthony Waterman," also 19 lbs, conveyed to Anthony 100 acres in Marshfield; witnesses, Kenelm Winslow, Winter Hewet. Mr. Joseph Waterman of Marshfield exchanged land, 25 Mar. 1708, with his son Joseph Waterman and Kenelm Winslow. He conveyed to Nathaniel Thomas of Plymouth, 1 Feb. 1705, and to Joseph Taylor, 29 Jan. 1699/1700; and sold land in Middleborough to Jonathan Barnes of Plymouth, 15 July 1700. These deeds were not recorded until after his diaath. [ib., 10-477, 572; 29-170].
