Dexter and their ten children. "Thomas, Mary, Matthew an d Mark were
born in Vaughan, Home District, York County, Upper Canada. " In "May
1835 this family came to Lee Co., IL. . . "

1840 Census for Inlet Precinct, Lee Co., IL for John Dext er & family.

1845, May 21, Margaret Dudgeon Dexter died, two weeks aft er the death
of her new babe. Margaret was 32 years old. Thomas, th e eldest child,
was 14. Mary Jane Dexter, her oldest daughter, was 12 yea rs old when
her mother died.

"Another little girl, but eight days old has joined the oth er children
under the sunny espaliers of heaven. There is pain and sor row and a
nameless dread around the place where the dying mother lies . Over the
prairies, the white faced, black horses of Dr. Adams are sp eeding to the
stricken home, and from Dixon, (IL) Dr. Nash is hurrying t o meet him." Mr.
Thomas Dexter writes: "I remember our faith that they coul d cure her,
and our poor, helpless prayers. I remember the mournful co rtege of
friends who bor her body to that sand hill burial place; R ev Luke
Hitchcock's prayers and the presence of Father Birdsall, th e Wassons and
Badgers and Doans and Hawleys and Frosts and others--all are
photographed on my memory." (Son, Thomas, was not quite 1 5.)

JOHN B. DEXTER married #2 Rebecca W. Pratt 22, July 1845 . She died Mar
1847.

JOHN B. DEXTER married #3 Mrs. Leapha M. Palmer 3 May 1848 . She was
the widow of his partner. She died 15 May 1863.

!Declaration for Pension 27 Nov 1879. "John Dexter, a resi dent of
Sublett, Lee Co. Ill. . . enrolled 2 Oct 1861 at Amboy, Co . D of 46th Regt
of Ill. under Capt. Wilder. Discharged at LaGrange, Tenn . 10 Jul 1862. In
June 1862 at La Grange, from exposure, I took erysipelas an d diarrhea.
Since, I have resided in IL and Iowa. At enrollment I wa s a carpenter."
