Date of birth?Marvel Family by Mildred Burwell; Compendium of American GenealogyJohn Rogers, was probably born in Sussex County, Delaware in 1738.Records state he was a near relative of Daniel Rogers, governor ofDelaware, but does not give the name of his parents. It is presumed theymigrated from Virginia to Delaware. John Rogers married ComfortPrettyman in 1759 and settled near Georgetown, Delaware on land ownedby her father, Thomas Prettyman, Jr. The will of John Rogers, writtenOctober 6, 1794 and probated October 25, of that year in Sussex County,Delaware, names the following children: George, John, Leah, Patience,and Unice Rogers, Ann Jones, Comfort Fisher, Rachel Warren, PollaBivans, Lavina Marvel and Orpha Marvel. It was the custom of that daythat male members of the family were named first in a will and names ofthe other children did not necessarily follow in chronological order.It is known that Lavina Rogers Marvel was born in 1765; John Rogers in1773; and Orpha Rogers Marvel in 1775. The will of Comfort (Prettyman)Rogers was written January 28, 1797 and probated March 1st of that yearin Sussex County, Delaware.Some books have stated that George Rogers was a Baptist preacher, butlater research has proved it was his brother John. On his tombstone in afamily cemetery near Georgetown, Delaware is this inscription: "Rev.John Rogers - July 19, 1773 and departed this life March 8, 1861 - aged87 years, 70months and 19 days."
