Without a doubt this branch in our family tree has been the most fun to research. The language barrier was just one of the challenges to overcome but it was the country's 19 century and earlier naming practices that took a while to get use too.You see, family surnames as you and I know it today were not used. Instead of seeing John Smith son of Peter Smith you would see John Peter son of Peter, with the first name of Peter's father used as his surname and so on. It doesn't stop there, now a suffix would also be added indicating a son or daughter of Peter. For example, you would see John Peterson or John Petersen. A daughter would be Eve Peterdatter, or Eve Peterdotter. Wives never changed their surname to that use by their husbands, If Eve Petersdatter got married her name would not change. There are other naming practices that were also used but thankfully not on a regular basis. Sometimes you would see John Peterson Hillisted, In this case Hillisted is the farm on which John may have been raised or where he had worked as an adult etc. Needless to say it was all a bit confusing when I had first began my research on my Norwegian family lines and I had done a great deal of reading to get a grasp of it all. One of the best things that helped make this research so enjoyable was the amount of original and transcribed sources from the Digitalarchives of Norway. With so many records available free of charge, unlike so many other country records, it has been a gold mine for someone like myself who can not get to a history center and can not afford memberships to places that most likely do not have the information I am looking for. I have obtained a wealth of images of original records for my files and continue to do so. The staff at the Digital Archives have done an amazing job and deserve great praise. Now not all the people in my Norway files have sources and document images as many if not most on my maternal grandmothers side have be given to me by long lost cousins but I look forward to bunkering down in the archives and supplementing those lines with more and even new sources.I hope that your research has been as enjoyable and fruitful and may it continue to be so.Thank youDiane
