Jefferson Rowland is not found in the 1840 census. He is in the 1850 census. The indexes erroneously list him as "Jefferson Renland". The census actually does say "Rowland".

Since Jefferson Rowland's wife, Mary Perry, had died when her father's estate was settled, Jefferson Rowland became guardian of his own minor children who became heirs of Benjamin Perry. The following transcript is of a receipt from Bismark Rowland's box of Rowland family papers:

Jefferson Rowland Guard

Marina Rowland 140.14 paid off Oct 10 1856
Benjamin [Rowland] 140.14
David [Rowland] 140.14
Mary [Rowland] 140.14
Robt [Rowland] 140.14 $700.70

**********
All three of Jefferson Rowland's sons fought in the Civil War. His son Robert was killed in the Civil War. See notes for each of his sons. After the war Jefferson signed the Oath of Amnesty.

During the Civil War Jefferson Rowland lost a horse to the 5th TN cavalry (Union). They took his horse with no receipt or compensation. Jefferson made a claim to the government for the loss that occurred in 1864. In 1865 Jefferson evidently found who had his horse and went and took it, because we have a
court affidavit document accusing Jefferson of possessing a horse that was taken from a man who states the horse was taken in about late 1864 or early 1865 and was found in Jefferson's possession. Since we know that Jefferson was not hung for horse theft, it must have been Jefferson's horse. Also why would we have the documents? They were all in Jefferson's possession. The claim form was never notorized or sent in. A transcript:

Claim of Jefferson Rowland
Memorandum
1 Bay Horse $130.00
taken March 1st 1864
by a detachment of the 5th
Tennessee Cavalry
No receipt was given
Witnesses

Recorded in the Registers office in Dekalb County, Tennessee September 27, 1869.The date is estimated based on Mary Perry's young age and the age of her first child being only 6 months into 1836. The location is based on the fact that both the Rowlands and her parents were all living in Smith Co., TN at and well before 1835.
