Notes
Individual:
According to his daughter June: From family reports and letters from his youth, my father was an intellegent, judgmental and mildly lazy boy. As a young man he was idealistic and considered becoming a Presbyterian minister. The church agreed to assist him in paying his college expenses, but it was the depression and they backed down on their offer. Disillusioned, Dad worked his way through Albany College (now Lewis and Clark) in Portland, Oregon and became an agnostic.

At Albany, he met my mother and they married after her sophomore year. It was still the depression so he took the only job he could find; it was in a dry goods store (that is what it says on my birth certificate). Actually, he worked for J.J. Newberry Co. his entire adult life.

Dad was an avid reader and loved good music. We were the last people we knew to get TV and only then because of the World Series. I never heard employees or acquaintances call my dad anything but Mr. Smith. His nature was serious but with his children he was willing to be devil's advocate on any issue. His humor had an edge to it.

Although working for J.J. Newberry's didn't satisfy his love of words, ideas, poetry or music, it did provide for our family. For many years, he was paid once a year based on a percentage of the net profit of the store. We took inventory very seriously! Dad was ahead of his time in hiring practices. During WWII, he had Japanese employees and cried when they were put into camps for the duration of the war. He also hired black salespeople before anyone else in town considered it, which was not a popular action.

Words that describe Dad are responsible, truthful to a fault, and knowledgeable. During his 40's and 50's he suffered from manic-depression (bi-polar disorder). It wasn't easy for any of us, but medication allowed him to function until his death from a heart attack at the age of 56. He died in his store bailing water from a broken pipe in the fountain.
