Individual:
John, Adam's full brother, would be remembered less kindly by him as a man "who was neither useful to himself or me in his life; who was a hard brother to me at the time of his death." Whereas the elder Winthrop had transferred his London business interests to William, John had inherited Groton manor when his father died in 1562. Chancery records reveal numerous disputes with neighbors; his marriage failed; and a bill of excommunication was read against him by the very rector he had established in the parish church. In 1596, he left Groton to the management of his brother Adam and emigrated to Ireland. There he settled in Cork on the Munster Plantation, entered a new marriage of questionable legality, and served under Essex in the suppression of the Irish Revolt of 1599. He died in Ireland in 1613 after having sold the rights to Groton to his nephew John in a transaction brokered by his brother Adam, young John's father.6
6The basic leads for the story of John Winthrop in Ireland were established by Robert C. Winthrop in his privately printed Some Account of the Early Generations of the Winthrop Family in Ireland (1883). This information has been supplemented by my examination of the Winthrop Papers in the Massachusetts Historical Society, from Chancery Court records in the Public Record Office, and from Michael MacCarthy Morrogh's The Munster Plantation: English Migration to Southern Ireland, 1583-1641 (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1986).
