Individual:
John ... was born probably in New York City, in 1705 or 1706. He went with his parents to Saybrook, CT, and thence to Dedham, MA. When a young man he returned to New York and settled there. He went to sea and became a captain of vessels out of the por of New York. He was also a merchant in that city. He amassed quite a fortune, and retired to his country seat at Flushing, on Long Island. On October 8, 1735, he was elected an alderman in New York City. He was one of the founders of the New York (Society) Library, in 1753. From 1756 to 1760, he was a vestryman of Trinity Church. Was made a member of the Marine Society, April 12, 1772.
He married, August 28, 1728, Sarah(3), daughter of Capt. James(2) and Sarah (Cornell) Sands of Oyster Bay, L.I. She died Dec. 4, 1765, in her 57th year of her age. ("Aspinwall genealogy, The")
