Individual:
John ... was born probably in New York City, in 1705 or 1706. He wentwith his parents to Saybrook, CT, and thence to Dedham, MA. When a youngman he returned to New York and settled there. He went to sea and becamea captain of vessels out of the por of New York. He was also a merchantin that city. He amassed quite a fortune, and retired to his country seatat Flushing, on Long Island. On October 8, 1735, he was elected analderman in New York City. He was one of the founders of the New York(Society) Library, in 1753. From 1756 to 1760, he was a vestryman ofTrinity Church. Was made a member of the Marine Society, April 12, 1772.
He married, August 28, 1728, Sarah(3), daughter of Capt. James(2) andSarah (Cornell) Sands of Oyster Bay, L.I. She died Dec. 4, 1765, in her57th year of her age. ("Aspinwall genealogy, The")
