Notes
Individual:
Deborah Bryant (named for Deborah Shaw) was born in 1745. New Garden Monthly Meeting minutes 7 Apr. 1764 state "Deborah Starr (formerly Bryan)" had been married by a magistrate and a testimony for her disownment was read and approved 22 June 1764.(2) Affidavits in the estate in Ky. of her sister, Margaret (Bryant) Hare, stated Margaret had a sister and a niece, Mary Starr, living in Va. (1800-1803)(23) Deborah's niece, Mary Ann Hunter, writing her impressions of New Orleans in 1815, said her mother "is pleased with Orleans very much, when my cousin Starr arrives, which I expect will be by the return of the Orleans, she will not have the slightest wish to leave it."(23) The term "cousin was used loosely in those years and Mary Ann could have referred to her cousin, Mary or to her Aunt Deborah, or both. (See Hunter following.) Poulson's American Daily Advertiser of Philadelphia reported the death of Deborah Starr, relict of Alexander Starr, "late of Chester Co.," in Philadelphia 21 Apr. 1830, age 85. (An Alexander Starr died in London Grove Twp., Chester Co. Pa. in 1768.(9)). Mrs. Starr had lived a few years at 16 Lawrence street.2l Her daughter, Mary Starr died 22 Apr. 1830, age 64.(24) Tiberious J. Bryant, Deborah's nephew, was the administrator of both their estates, which consisted of personal clothing, jewelry and household goods.(25) However, the city directory continued to note Mrs. Starr at the Lawrence St. address through 1833,(21) and perhaps Deborah owned that house.
