Individual:
The first floor was the store and drinking place. The second floor was for the family and perhaps other boarders. The outside ladder reached the third floor which I imagine as a place of sanctuary where John could get away from the over-stimulation of sights and sounds, commonly find in persons with Huntington's disease. John may have abused alcohol, obsessive compulsive disorder, mood swings, chorea form movements, angry outbursts, lack of inhibitions, haluscultations and suicide. He conducted seances in the home.
Perhaps, knowing he suffered from this genetic inherited condition will provide clues to finding his parents, He did become emotionally unstable and was committed to an asylum for the insane.
