Individual:
He was employed as a hatter and when the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in the Navy Aug 29 1864 and served as a landsman aboard the USS Sloop of War Lancaster in North Carolina, Panama and Cajon, Peru. He was discharged Oct 24 1865. Landsmen served as armorers, carpenters, painters, etc. and were paid $12 a month. Upon his return to Danbury he became employed as a janitor at the New Street School in Danbury, site of today's fire department headquarters. (Jerrold Davis, 2003-09-22)
