Individual:
Judah Welles was the Canadian pioneer who emigrated to Cornwallis in 1760. All of his children were born there. The arrival of Judah in Nova Scotia in 1760 was a result of a large movement of Connecticut and Massachusetts settlers to that part of Canada. In May 1760, 22 vessels sailed from New London with 7,000 persons from New London, Lebanon, Colchester, Lynne and other nearby towns. At this same time 6 vessels loaded with cattle and goods embarked for the new settlement. This fleet carrying what were known as the New England Planters arrived at Port Williams on the Cornwallis River, off Terry's Creek, as it was called, on June 4, 1760. They took over the lands of the Arcadians and all the area between the Grand Pre and the section known as Kings County. One hundred acres were given each family head and 50 acres to each member of his family. The settler agreed to cultivate his holdings for 30 years. The Townships of Hartford, Cornwallis, and Falmouth became at once important areas both by population and commerce. On May 4, 1783 the ships carrying 5,000 settlers to Port Roseway, New Shelburne arrived. These were called the United Empire Loyalists. About the same time there were many English Immigrants direct from Yorkshire, England.
