BARONY OF PARR OF HORTON (I)
WILLIAM PARR, 2nd son of Sir William PARR, K.G. (who died shortly before 26 February 1483/4) (b), by his 2nd wife, Elizabeth (c), 2nd daughter of Henry (FITZHUGH), LORD FITZHUGH. He was an Esquire of the Body to King Henry VII, and, 9 October 1510 to March 1511/2, to King Henry VIII, to whom he became a Knight of the Body;) Keeper of the great and little parks of Brigstock, 30 December 1505 and 18 November 1506; Steward of the King's lands in co. Pembroke, 28 August 1509. As one of the King's Spears he took part in the French wars from 1512, was knighted at Tournai 25 September 1513, and was present at the Field of Cloth of Gold in 1520. He was Sheriff of co. Northampton, 1517-18, 1522, 1533-34, and 1537-38; served in Scotland under the Earl of Surrey and Lord Dacre in 1523; Keeper of Rockingham Castle, 17 June 1523 to 25 May 1544; Chamberlain to the King's son Henry, Duke of Richmond, and member of his Council of the North from 1525, M.P. for co. Northampton, 1529-36. He took a prominent part in the suppression of the Lincolnshire rebellion in 1536. He was created, 23 December 1543, BARON PARR OF HORTON, co. Northampton, being then Chamberlain to his niece Katharine Parr, the 6th and last Queen Consort of Henry VIII. He was one of the Queen's Council of Regency during the King's absence in 1544; Keeper of Rockingham Park, 4 November 1546 till his death.
He married, before 1511, Mary, daughter and coheir of William SALISBURY, of Horton, by Elizabeth, daughter and coheir of Thomas WYLDE, of Bromham, Beds, whereby he acquired the estate of Horton. He died s.p.m., about November (before 13 December) 1547, and was buried at Horton, when his peerage became extinct. M.I. His widow died 10 July 1555, and was buried at Horton. M.L. (b) His 1st wife, Joan, widow of Thomas Colt, d. Aug 1473 (lands in Cumberland, Berks, Essex, etc.), when her son and heir was John Colt, then aged 9.
(c) She afterwards m. Sir Nicholas Vaux, of Harrowden, co. Northampton, who was created in 1523, Lord Vaux of Harrowden. She d. before 29 Jan 1507/8.
