Individual:
Genealogical searches have turned up a history of the Bates families (at one time known only as Bate) back to the 1400's starting with a John Bate. But teh records of that family in America which began with the arrival of James Bates on the "Elizabeth" at Dorchester, Mass, in 1635, do not reveal when the family moved from Mass. or Conn. to N.J.
Searches have found a Bates Coat of Arms: A shield crossed by a gold band with edges scalloped. Above the band are two right hands in silver cut off at wrist placed at an angle. Below the band is a single band, as above. Any claim that the shield belongs to Laura's ancestors is unsubstantiated at this point.
