Acadia was considered settled by 1650. The Girouard's are among the 50families who immigrated before that time. Those families comprisethecore of the Acadian culture. they were farmers who built dykes on thelowlying land adjacent to the Bay of Fundy; transforming the saltwatermarshes into farm land.
New French colonization was virtually non-existent after 1710. Newsettlers came from other countries, soldiers, sailors, and fromtheQuebec area.

The Port Royal Acadian Census of 1678-79 indicates that Francois owned 15 acres of land as well as 18 cattle. The initial Acadian census of 1671indicated that François Girourd as then owning 16 cattle and a dozensheep. In addition to listing children Jacob and Germain, the censusindicated the couple had 3 daughters (unnamed). François arrived inAcadia about 1640.
