January 8 1644, Robert Cormier, master ship builder, begins to come towork Saint-Pierre at the height, on the island of Cape Breton.
Robert, originating in La Rochelle, his wife Marie Praud and Thomas,their only son, depart on the ship, la Petit Saint-Pierre to makethevoyage across the Atlantic.
Thomas Cormier married Marie-Madeleine Girouard, daughter of FrançoisGirouard and Jeanne Aucoin. He is then thirty-two years old. Afterliving for a time in Port-Royal, they then set out, with othercolonists,to found the colony of Beaubassin.


Arrived at Cape Breton around 1644 as an employee of Nicolas Denye. Robert was a Master Carpenter. Died on 12 FEB 1711 or 1712. He mayhavemarried in 1634

This contract ended by the summe rof1647.HelikelythereforewitnessedthepassageofCapeBretontoPortRoyalallegiance.WasheimmediatelydraggedtothiscolonizationcenterordidhegobacktoFrance?NeitherRobert, hiswifeorsonJean'snamesappearinanycensus,possiblytheydidnotsurvivesomemishap.IftheyhadreturnedtoFranceitwouldhavemeantleavingThomas behind,andsincehewasonly11yearsoldatthetime,thisseemsunlikely.Thomas'nameappearsonPortRoyalregistersin1668.Ayearlater,hismarriagetoMadeleineGirouard,borninAcadia, isrecorded.

"A number of fisherman brought over by DENYS to work at his posts along the Atlantic Coast also settled down to become Acadian patriarchs. One ofthese was Robert CORMIER, who settled in the Annapolis River basin afterworking out his contract with DENYS."

Went to Acadia to work on Nicolas Deny's fort at Saint Peters onCape Breton. "The enlistment contract, signed at La Rocelle on January 8,1664was found in the archives of nortary Teuleron. Robert Cormieragreeed tocome to Acadia with his family and to work there for threeyears. It appears that Robert returned to Frnace and that his onlyson,Thomas, stayed in Acadia."

Robert was the first Cormier to come to Canada--- the root of allCormiers on the American Continent. Probably was brought over by theSieur LeBORGNE de BELLISLE on the vessel of Sieur Andre TUFFET --KING'SCOUNSELLOR1644 to go to Fort Saint Breton Island. He was a carpenter whowas listedon the first Arcadian census in 1671 at age 35 and establishedin PortRoyal in 1671, then Beaubassin in 1686where four sons eventuallylocatedin 1752. The family were refugees in the Isthmusof Acadia at theNampanRiver at Wesak at Beausejour. He helped develop Beaubassin.

(There the numerous records of "contracts of agreement" for services in"Acadie" prepared by the notaries of LaRochelle in the years 1630to1654. The contracts were generally for three years of service. TheCORMIER contract would have been completed in 1647 after which theymovedinto Port Royal in the Annapolis Basin. There is no further recordofRobert and Marie in the Port Royal area, and they are not listed inthe1671 censu for the area. They had either died before then or returnedtoFrance.
