Nicolas BELLANGER (1632-1682), another native of Touques, (without knownrelations with the former) came to Beauport in 1655. He is only 19 yearsold. His occupation is that of cod fisherman. He married, on the 11th ofJuly 1660, Marie De Rainville. They got 12 children and it became thebiggest Norman family in Canada. To day the house of Nicolas Bellanger,in the historical site, is still visible

Oldest son of Francois. Had 6 boys and 6 girls. Also see note under Bertrand-Pierre. Spelled his name Bellanger and may have been alsocalled Catherine; as a last name (perhaps a "dit" name? JFN,1997)). Became acitizen, 28 SEP 1658
The exact arrival date of this Ancestor in New France is not known. His name appears in the records of the Seigneurie of Beauport on 15 OCT 1655 asowner of a piece of property of one arpent and 61 rods. That is where, somesay, the first records appear of Nicolas in the region.
The second mention appears in an act dated 28 SEP 1658 before theNotary Audouart where Nicolas is employed or pledged to Michel Desorcys.
On 12 NOV 1659, Nicolas Bellanger and his future wife, Marie deRainville present themselves before Paul Vachon, the Royal Notary of theSeigneurie and the Jurisdiction of Beauport and Prevost of Notre Dame des Anges toprofess their marriagecontract in front of witnesses, parents and friends aswas the custom of the era.
From this act, we learn that the couple originates from the parishof Saint Thomas of Touques in Normandy (France), that Nicolas is proficient atthe salt trade and that the parents of Marie are Paul de Rainville and RollinePoette. The textdoes not mention the parents of Nicolas.
We also note that his name is spelled with a double l as in Bellanger, which corresponds with the pronunciation most popular at that time.
Nicolas and Marie are married on Sunday the 11th of January 1660 inthe presence of Father Paul Rageuneau of the Compagnie de Jesus in thechapel of the Seigneurial manor where the religious ceremony was guaranteed bythe officials who took care of these matters.
Beauport had not yet constructed a parish and the recorded marriage,in the records of the mother parish, Notre Dame de Quebec, does not mentionthe names of Nicolas' parents. This omission deprives us of an important pieceof evidence.
A renouned genealogist, Father Archange Godbout, O.F.M., found several Bellangers in the registers of Saint Thomas de Touques in the period1628-1657.
A few of these are: Jacques, Jean, Hector, Louis, Robert, Marguerite, Francoise, Marie et Catherine. In each case it was impossible toestablish with any degree of certainty that any were related to the ancestor.
The little white house at 600 Avenue Royale in Beauport was built by,or for, Nicolas Bellanger on land deeded to him by the Seigneur Joseph Giffardon 24 JAN 1673 before the Notray Paul Vachon. The house originally was 22feet by 20 feet and was constructed of stone upon stone. This home was passeddown to a son of Nicolas, Pierre, around 1700.
This last heir lived there for about 20 years and sold the home to aman named Marcou. It was the last owner, a Mr. Girardin, who left his name tothe house before it became the property of the Sisters of the Congregation. Theactual property was saved from the pick-ax of a demolition crew by a Mr.Michel Dufresne.
NOTE* In the reference "Repertoire des Mariages de Notre Dame DeQuebec, 1618-1700, compiled by Benoit Pontbriand, 2390 Marie Victorin Sillery- 6" the marriage records of Francois Belanger to Marie Guyon with theirparents are listed as Francois and Francoise Horlays and Jean & MathurineRobin.
Two other marriages are listed here. That of Nicolas Belanger toMarie de Rainville and of Marie Madeleine Belanger to Bertran Chesne. Nicolasand Marie Madeleine have the same parents listed and they are Francois &Marie Guyon.
This shows that the ancestor Nicolas is indeed the son of Francois.Marie Madeleine married Bertran Chesne and much is mentioned about Francois' relationship with his son in law, Bertran Chesne.
Nicolas died on 19 OCT 1682 at the age of 50 years. His first born, Bertrand-Pierre, was then 19 and his youngest had just turned one.One of Nicolas' sons had died at a young age, another died before 1681 and agirl, Marthe, was married. Nine children were still living in the paternalhome at the time.
The death notice said; On the 20th day of OCT 1682, was buried in thecemetery of Beauport, Nicholas Bellanger, aged 50 years, farmer of this region, died the previous day in the christian faith.
Assisting in the funeral arrangements were Rene Remy, Paul Vachon,Notary Royal, at Beauport (Quebec, Canada) and Jean de Rainville, brother inlaw of the deceased. All signed the witness document except Jean deRainville who could not write. This was done according to the local ordinances.
In the Dictionnaire National des Canadiens Francais, Partie Historiqueof the Institut Drouin, Pages 1389 and 1390, the story of Nicolas lists himas being from Saint-Thomas-de-Touques, Diocese of Lisieux, in Normandy(France). It also states that he is the cousin of Francois.
"Genealogie des Familles de Terrebonne", by Raymond Masson Volume 1,lists Nicolas as being the first born son of Francois.
Born in Saint-Thomas of Touques, Diocese of Lisieux in Normandy,France. Came to the Cote De Beauport around 1659.
"The Hall of Names" source seems to indicate Nicolas was baptised inQuebec (Canada) in 1638. This source also indicates he is the son ofFrancois and Marie Guyon. Marie signed her marriage contract with an "X".Contracted to marry 11/12/1659 which was blessed in the church on 11 JAN 1660.Contrat de Mariage 12 NOV 1659, notaire Vachon.
Nicolas and Marie had 6 boys and 6 girls. He spelled his nameBellanger and may also have been known as Catherine; as a last name (perhaps a "dit"name?). Nicolas became a citizen on 28 SEP 1658 but the exact arrival date ofthis Ancestor in New France is not known.
His name appears in the records of the Seigneurie of Beauport on 15OCT 1655 as the owner of a piece of property of one arpent and 61 rods. Thatis where, some say, the first records appear of Nicolas in the region. Thesecond mention appears in an act dated 28 SEP 1658 before the notary Audouartwhere Nicolas is employed or pledged to Michel Desorcys.
The Church of the Latter Day Saints records; Page 6, 1000, showrecords of France. There is shown a birth of Nicolas in Touques, Calvados in1638 with parents listed as Francois Belanger and Marie Guyon. (The preceding isa mis-leading reference because it does not indicate what/which LDSRecord(s) is/are being refered to. JFN,1997)
Most records seem to indicate that Nicolas was born in Saint Thomas ofTouques in the Diocese of Lisieux in the Normandy region of France. It is saidthat Nicolas migrated to the Cote of Beauport around 1659. There isconjecture, however, that Nicolas was the illegitimate son of Francois Bellangerand Marie Guyon. The dates between Francois' marriage and the birth of his sonCharles would support this theory.
In all of the records dealing with Nicolas and his children, nomention is ever made of Francois or Marie Guyon being present. Their geographic separation (in Quebec) was not so far that one would not have visitedthe other and been present at a marriage or christening or something, ifthey had been father and son. But, we don't know how strongly these factsmight have been hidden and can only conjecture that it is possible.
