"The ancestor of the Cormier family in Acadia - Thomas - was bornaround 1636 in La Rochelle, France....He came to Acadia as a childwithhis father to work on Nicolas Deny's fort at Saint Peters on CapeBreton." "It appears that Robert [his father] returned to France andhis onlyson, Thomas, stayed in Acadia. The census taken in 1671 inPort-Royalindicates that Thomas Cormier was - like his father - acarpenter bytrade, that he was 35 years old and married to 17-year-oldMadeleineGirouard. He had a small farm with seven horned animals andseven sheep. A few years later, Thomas moved, with his family toBeaubassin, where he was one of the pioneers of the new Acadian colony. All Cormiershave their roots in Beaubassin. Thomas left a family of 10children,including four sons: Fracois, Alexis, Germain and Pierre."
