Individual:
It is believed he was born in Ireland and came to Prince Edward
Island, Canada with his brother, Peter. (This was told to me byThelma Dalton (Mrs. Sanford Phillips).)
They probably came in the wave from Ireland about 1820 or slightly before, getting out when the British were taking over. It was easierfor them to go to Canada, a British possession than it was to go toAmerica. But then many of them emigrated from Canada to America.(from Millicent Craig, Dalton Genealogical Society).
In the 1841 Census, Jeremiah and Catharina lived in Lot 7. His occupation was shipscarpenter and he listed their religion as "other".There were 2 people born in Ireland and 6 people born in PEI, Canada,in the household. The census counted 3 boys and 3 girls under the ageof 16 and one man aged 16 to 45. Catharina wasn't listed because "hiswife has been afflicted about 15 months, appears to be recovering fromthis malady".
In the 1861 census, they were still living in Lot 7 and he was now listed a farmer. And now they were listed as B.Xn. (Bible Christian). The household consisted of one girl aged 16 to 21, one man aged 21 to45, and a couple aged 45 to 60.
Jeremiah's death was listed in two newspapers. In the 13 Dec 1875 edition of the Examiner (pg. 3) - "At his residence, Lot 7, onNovember 7th, after an illness of seven weeks, Jer. Dalton, sen. inthe 69th year of his age." Another newspaper confirms thisinformation, plus continues his obituary at great length. (10 Dec 1875edition of Weekly ? Patriot - pg. 3).
Birth date was given to me by Olive Dalton Coughlin 3/15/2001.
He died in his 69th year at his home, Lot 7, PEI, after an illness of
7 weeks.
Buried at West Cape Unit. Cemetery. There is no longer a stone per
his great granddaughter, Thelma Dalton (11 Feb 2001).
