Individual:
He resided in Freetown for a few years. He may have married a cousin
on his mother's side because her name was Cook also. He came toColeman in 1867 and obtained the lease of the property owned then byJohn Mitchell. At a later time, he began the purchase of the farm.Older residents of the community claim that Maurice was an expert inthe art of mowing with a scythe and each year many farmers sought hishelp to cut their hay and grain. Because he did so much scything forothers, it was necessary for him to mow his own crops in the evenings.
Maurice and Emma raised Margaret Ann (Maggie) Wall (b. 2 Jan 1873), daughter of Elizabeth Wall of Freetown. Elizabeth was the sister ofAbraham Wall who moved to Coleman, PEI. Mrs. Abraham Wall wasTheodosia Jane Cook (b. 1861). Floyd Smallman thought that Emma andTheodosia were sisters because the Daltons visited the Walls. Theyreferred to Maurice and Emma as uncle and aunt - or were they onlycalling them out of respect? Theodosia's parents were George Cookand Jane Doyle who married in 1852 but Emma was b. 1843 according toher gravestone. The date could be wrong since her death date waswrong.
The first son of Maurice and Emma was called George.
They lived in Lot 9 & farmed. In 1881, they were Presbyterians & in 1891, they were Methodists.
Marriage:
Maurice and Emma were married by Robert S. Patterson. Witnesses were
J. B. Clarke and Wm. James (Islander 13 Aug 1869). In their marriage, they were listed as both of Bedeque. According to Brae history, theylived in Freetown a few years and came to Brae in 1869.
