Early Settlers of AL by Saunders
Bible Rec. TN DAR
Col. Abraham Maury (37-2)(RN3709)
Col. Abraham Maury was the younger son of Mathew Maury and Mary Anne Fontaine. He was born in King William Co., VA in 1731. As was a custom in the Maury and Fontaine Families, good education was important. Abraham graduated from William and Mary. In 1752 Halifax Co., Va was formed from Lunenburg, Co., VA. In 1756 Abraham was appointed Col. of the Halifax County. This was a very trying time for the country in that General Braddock had been defeated and Col. Washington was discouraged. The only leaders at this time were on the local level. The problem during this period were the French and the Indians. Of coarse this led to the French and Indian War.
Col. Maury married Susanna Poindexter who was a blood relation to Sen. Poindexter of MS. to Williamson Co., TN. They lived at Franklin, TN. Maury Co., TN which was an adjacent county was named for Abraham Maury. Many of the descendents moved to Lawrence Co., AL. Mary Ann Maury de Graffenried who was the wife of Metcalf went to AL and died there Oct. 3, 1823. Metcalf had died in 1803 in Williamson Co. TN.
Col. Maury was a merchant and on a trip to Baltimore he contacted small-pox and died from it on January 24, 1784.
The Maury Cemetery is located on Del Rio Road in Franklin, TN. The de Graffenried Cemetery is located on Glass Lane in Franklin, TN.
