Handwritten note to Vesta Smith Russell by Kate Powell Smith:

Vesta I never did tell you any thing about my father your grandfather he was a
gun smith by trade he helped make the guns the Civil War fought with the
family all lived in the state of Georgia after the war was over in 1864 then
they headed for Arkansas where he lived till he was killed the year 1876
mother kept his gun that he had made during the war after the Boys all died I
fell heir to the gun I put it in the museum at Fort Smith if you should want
see it those ladies seem to be glad to get it it was so old it will be safe
Allen Powell will be remembered.
