Notes
Individual:
What follows was sent to me by Toby Turner:In 1779 he furnished a substitute to the Militia. In that sameyear, he probably served as vestryman of Amherst church. In1780, he served as a Lieutenant in the Militia. On 29 Sept.1781, he furnished 305 lbs. of beef [Source: Pub. ServiceClaims. p. 12]. He was probably the Henry who took an oath asEnsign on 2 Dec. 1782. Family tradition tells that he was knownand called "Major Turner."In Impressed Property Claims For Persons In Amherst CountyDuring The Revolution: Also Some Interesting Excerpts From AnEarly Order Book of Amherst County, I found that, in addition tothe 305 lbs of beef valued at 2-20-20, he also provided 54 1/2lbs of bacon 23 Feb. 1781 Militia (2-0-9); 9 bu of corn, 60sheaves of oats and 200 lbs of fodder 28 Feb., 1781 Augustmilitia (1-3-6) [page 490 in 'The Lost Order Book']. In theOrder Book of 1784-1787 in the July court 1785, he provided 85lbs of bacon (3-3-9) Amherst militia when guarding prisonersmarching through this County; proved in court.Listed beside John on the 1783 tax list, he had 6 in his familyand 7 slaves. In Amherst County Virginia In The Revolution 1773-1782 IncludingExtracts from the "Lost Order Book" by Leonora HigginbothamSweeny on page 39, in the Court held December 2, 1782, HenryTurner qualified as Ensign on page 71.On page 47 [ibid.] a Henry Turner is named as a revolutionarysoldier in the chapter entitled, "Revolutionary Soldiers fromAmherst County, Comprising then the Territory of the PresentCounty of Nelson."On page 173 [ibid.], there is the following entry: "Turner,Henry, - Pike Co., Mo., June 13, 1849, Rachel Turner, aged 89,widow of Henry Turner who furnished a substitute 1779 in AmherstCo., Va., Militia, and in 1780 served as Lt., applied. Theirson, Stephen B. Turner, same place, June 7, 1852, applied for apension for the heirs of his father who he thought was a Captainin the Revolution. His parents were married 1777 in Bedford Co.,Va. Father d. in Amherst Oct. 23, 1829; mother d. Jan. 4, 1850.Rejected." Then follows the names and birthdates of his childrenfrom a Bible record. The Lynchburg Virginian, in an obituary on page 3, column 5,gives the date of death as October 26, 1829 and his age as 78,referring to him as "Another Revolutionary Patriot gone."In Amherst County, Virginia Will Book 7: 277 - September 29,1828, Henry Turner's will was filed showing as Witnesses: JesseMundy, Chas.
