What follows was sent to me by Toby Turner:On January 13, 1781, James' name appears in the Amherst CountyPublic Service Claims onpage 11 for having furnished the militia with 3 steers at a costof œ9.15.10. On the 1783 Property Tax List he had 12 in hisfamily plus 11 slaves. In 1800 he was taxed for 2 negroes and 2horses.[Source: Book A - 1800, Amherst County Personal Property Lists]"He is also mentioned in Rev. Edgar Woods' History of Albemarlewhere he's described as belonging to Amherst and being aconsiderable landowner on the lower Hardware. In the sketch onthe Hamner family, the Turners are said to have lived on TotierCreek near various Hamner in-laws, 'though the Turners soonremoved to Amherst.' James also owned land in Kentucky which hedisposed of in his Will."[Source: Some Turners of Virginia by Louise Patton RichardsonTurner, 1965.]In "The Lost Order Book," James Turner is shown to have provided3 steers adjudged to weight of 1175 lbs 13 Jan. 1781 militia(9-15-10) [page 483].In the Bute County Safety Committee Meeting Minutes, Appendix Ilists The Early Masons in Bute County, North Carolina underJohnson-Caswell Buffalo Blanford-Bute No. 10 Warrenton a JamesTurner 1786 is listed. Whether or not this refers to this JamesTurner is unknown.In The 1787 Census of Virginia, The Amherst County PersonalProperty Tax 1787 - List "A", on page 179, James Turner'shousehold is shown to have two white males above 16 and under21, 6 blacks over 16, 10 blacks under 16, 7 horses, mares, coltsand/or mules and 21 cattle. Beneath his name are shown the namesof the two sons over 16, yet under 21: John and Stephen Turner.In the same book as above [ibid.] in Bedford County PersonalProperty Tax 1787 - List "B" on page 209, the household of aJames Turner, Sr. is shown to have consisted of 5 blacks over16, 1 black under 16, 2 horses, mares, colts, and/or mules, and10 cattle. No children are shown. Either this is another JamesTurner, Sr. or this is another property on which he did notactually reside.In Albemarle County in Virginia by Rev. Edgar Woods, on page333, it states that he (James Turner) sold his property in thecounty (Albemarle) before the end of the last century (1799),part to Samuel Dyer, and much the larger part to PleasantDawson.In Amherst Will Book 4:223, it shows the Will as writtenNovember 24, 1805 and proven on June 15, 1806. Codicil, January31, 1806. Full text follows:"In the name of God Amen, I James Turner of the county ofAmherst being of sound mind but weak in body do make & ordainthis to be my last will & Testament.Item the 1st. I lend to my wife Rebecca Turner the Lands whereonI now live with all the serveys (sic) ajoining (sic) untill(sic) my son William shall marry or come of lawfull(sic) age andwhich time he is to have two thirds of the same agreeable toquantity and quality with one room of the Swelling House alsoone room of the cellar of the said House and the other to mysaid wife during her natural life.2d. I lend to my said wife during her natural life two negroes,to wit, Jack & Betsey also one third part of all my householdand kitchen furniture and also one third part of all my stock inkind . .Item 3d. I direct 2 thirds of my Household & Kitchen furnitureand also two thirds of all stock of all kind to be sold by myexecutors here after appointed and the money equtably (sic)divided among my daughters to wit, Nancey Mildred Judith Lucy &Pasey, the Exr have power to sell on such credit as they thinkbest for my said Daughters the land that is left to my said wifeduring her life also the two negroes, to wit, Jack & Betseyafter death I give to my son William to him and his heirs. Igive to my son John the land which he now lives containing onehundred and fifty acres to him & his heirs, and whereas by atote contract between my son John & myself entered into he is tohave one half of my mill formerly called Lyons old mill whichhas been but since I purchased it of Lyons Estate by my son Johnand my self together with eighty acres of land adjoiningthereto. Boundeth (sic) as followeth beginning in Saml Andersonsline at the first branch below the said mill and down the saidbranch to the creek and then crossing the said creek and up thesaid creek to the privy branch Terisha Turner decd I will desirethat my half of the saw mill be my Executors keep any way asthey may think most profitable for my Estate and the moneyarising from said mill in the first place to be applyed (sic) tothe payment of my just debts and then for the support of all myunmarried children.
