Title: Notes
Text:
I have not personally verified any of this information, but here is what I have gathered:
Thomas Howard was born in Wilkes County, Georgia. Some researchers list him as
James, but Thomas seems to be the preferred name. It is said that he was killed by Native
Americans, probably Shawnee. He married Lettie Durham, born 1743 in Cherokee
Nation, Wilkes County, Georgia. Her Cherokee name is said to be Hatchet Gray. The
story is that she is a princess, but I've read on Cherokee sites that there is no such thing;
it's just what people always say about their ancestors. Her Cherokee background isn't
proven, but researchers seem to believe it is real, unlike most of the other rumored
Cherokees in this line. They had nine children: Sarah, Thomas (watch for the Thomas' to
get mixed up in online histories), James, John, Elizabeth, Celia, William and Judith.
These children are debated here and there. Most of what I've found seems to be collected
information and I haven't seen listings of any official sources yet. I descend through
Benjamin.
Title: Additional Information
Text:
People have been trying to prove her origin for some time. Native researchers
believe her to be full-blooded Cherokee Indian because of her location time of
birth. There are many Durham's still living on Reservations today. They got the
name from a Missionary who helped the Cherokee people. Recent book
published on the Revolutionary War (title unknown) leads you to believe Thomas
was well-liked by the Cherokee people. (Info from NAAH kitty) She published a
newletter about Native Americans.
