Notes
Individual:
Hoyman

Notes from JHC:
Existing family records showed only one child, William
There is a will of John Chalk, Canterbury, Hoyman, Dated 1 Jan1794,(proved 21 june 1794 - 30 4 Holman) to his wife Catherine - and children Catherine, Ann, Susannah, Thomas,
JOHN and WILLIAM having already had their share.
Mention is also made of Robert Howard, Richard Elgar - cousins and friend William Patteson.

All the associated genealogy is based on the family records that William was the issue of a n unknown Chalk m. Hammond in Kent, probably Milton near Canterbury.
Records of William's siblings, and the probable names of his parents come from 'The Book of C halks in Britain and the USA' by Minna Scott Chalk.
Note supposed transcription error in above book shows 'Lumis' in place of 'Sims'
Birth dates as deduced from 'Canterbury Marriage Licences 1781-1809' checked out with the abo ve for Catherine and Anne .. doubt must remain about Susannah as this would mean her marrying at around 40 years of age, although her marrying a widower may be consistant with this.
The Hammond connection remains a mystery, as John's spouse was Catherine SIMS.
Nickalls/Quihampton family sources also show that John's spouse was Susannah HAMMOND and tha t this couple's grand daughter Katherine (by way of William and Mary) married her cousin Charles Hammond!
There are too many close family connections across the generations and places concerned for t here to be a mistake in the familes concerned and to date no other William has been found to explain these discrepencies.

There was also a John who died Chatham, 2 Mar 1815 aged 78 (ie born around 1737), indivdual p resently unlocatable!

GentlemanâÇôs magazine: (Chalk, Jn., hopfactor, Canterbury. 29 Apr 1794 , aet. 58. (G.M. 482.))
At Canterbury, in his 58th year, Mr Jn. Chalk, hoyman and hop-factor, and one of the people c alled Quakers. Engaged, during the greater part of his life, in the busy and commercial world, and transacting the most important and momentous concerns, his never-failing probity and attention could not fail to win him the hearts of all who depended upon him; and the unlimited confidence reposed in him by all ranks is, perhaps, the best, because the most disinterested, panegyric that an be bestowed on his memory. As a man of business, a friend, a father, an husband, and a Christian, those who, by their situations in life, felt more particularly the effects of his virtues, can bear the amplest testimony to his punctuality, generosity, and charity, conjugal and parental affection.
