n 1610.
1775 licensed in surgery on merchant ships at age 18 (1775) in Marseilles being civilian no m ention of him in Layfette's records.
Jean Baptiste Elzeard Burel was his French name. In 1775 he was licensed to be a surgeon on m erchant ships by the Masters of Surgery of Marseilles. John came here with Lafayette and settled in the Germantown (according to census records of 1780 and 1790) area of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania--family would move to Union County, Abbeville District,
Goshen Hill, South Carolina around 1800.

Another source gives the following data:
Dr. Jean Baptiste Antonius Burel was a member of the French Royale Marines that accompanied G en. LaFayette during the American Revolution. A letter written by his wife states that he was present at the Yorktown surrender. He graduated from Univ. of Montpellier, Sect. of Medicine in France in 1770; moved to Goshen Hills sect. of Union Co. SC before 1790.
3 of their sons, Louis, Tom, & James, came to Gwinnett Co. GA with their families in the 1830 s or early 1840s (Louis was in SC in 1840 census). Tom & James, with their families, had moved to Attala Co., MS by 1850 census.Dr. Burel practiced in Philadelphia, PA, & a pocketbook of his is in the possession of R.H. Burel of Hog Mtn., GA. It is a large pocketbook, of expensive material, & the word, "Constantinoble," is printed on it, together with the date 1758.
Notes 4/2006-Carla: May also have a son William Burel found on 1840 Union SC Census next doo r to Lewis Burel. No confirmation of this.
From Burel-Burrel-Burrell Book by Bertrand Paquet:
Jean Baptiste Elzeard Burel was born in Ollioules, a village near Toulon, on the Mediterranea n coast of France. He was baptized in the Church of St. Laurent. His father, Jacques Burel, was then a merchant who later commanded a merchant ship; his mother was Madeleine Francoise Portalis Burel; his godfather was Elzeard de Flotte, son of Jean-Baptiste de Flotte, his godmother was his Aunt Marie Anne Burel.
In 1771, he was 14 and witnessed marriage of his Uncle Antoine and signed the marriage docume nt.
In, 1953, Ned Sloan located the original marriage record for Jean and Patience in the Old St . Joe's Church written in Latin, but this book is no longer available to copy. No record of Patience's origin has been found.
The Arkansas family tradition, from Louis' grandchildren, is that about 1785-86, John was tak ing his bride, Patience, and perhaps Louis to France to claim his inheritance, but when boarding the ship in Philadelphia, Patience so feared the trip that she persuaded John to stay in America. By 1812, John Burel had settled in Goshen Hill, where he sold land. How and why did he get there? By then he had anglicized his name to John.
We do not know where John was buried. In 1832 several of the Burel children sold their Unio n Co land and moved to Georgia and further west with the general drift of settlement.
In 1848, Patience Hannah, living in Union District, SC, applied to the American Government fo r a military pension. In that application she declared..."That she is the widow of Dr. John Burelle who was a surgeon in the French Army & Navy in America under Major General Layfette and served in that capacity with the Allied forces from the time he entered the service in 1778 until the French Army was discharged at the close of the war, and was present at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis to the Allied forces of France and America under General Washington and General LaFayette and other French offices at Yorktown." She enclosed her certificate of marriage and John's French medical license. The certificate and license are in the archives of Veterans Administration; the existence of these papers in that place proves that Jean-Baptiste Elzeard Burel of Ollioules and John Burel of Goshen Hill were the same person. The only other physical link between them is the leather wallet in teh possession of a descendent of John's son, Louis. There were other family relics in Georgia in the early 1900s but the wallet was the only one to survive a house fire many years ago.
Marriage:
Married in St. Joseph's Catholic Church
