Funeral services for Mary Etta Horst, 84, Shawnee were Monday, May 28, at the First Baptist church in Shawnee and on Tuesday, May 29, at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel, Garnett, with Pastor James Conrad officiating, interment was in the Garnett Cemetery, Mrs Horst died Wednesday, May 23, at her home in Shawnee.
Mary Etta Horst was born October 18,1916, at Garnett, the daughter of William Henry Halstead and Diannah Elizabeth Karns Halstead. She attended the Oklahoma College for women in Chickasha, Oklahoma, she had lived in the Kansas City area over sixty years.
Mrs Horst was an admissions officer at the University of Kansas Medical Center and had been employed at Penn Central Oil Company for thirty years, retiring in 1980. She was a member of the First Baptist church, Shawnee and a member of the American Business Women's Association. Mary liked to travel.
Mary and Clarence L Horst were married January 17,1935, at Liberty,Missouri. Mrs Horst was preceded in death by her parents, William and Diannah Halstead, three sisters, Wilma Halstead Huyett, Olive Halstead Dorsey, and Margariette Halstead hinkle; and five brothers, Isaac Halstead, Homer Halstead, Loren Halstead, Henry Clifford Halstead, and Albert H Halstead.
Mary is survived by one son, Clarence D Horst of Spring Hill; one daughter, Shirley J Horst Walker of Poway, California; four grandchildren, Robert Elliott of Salinas. California, Richard Elliott of Shawnee, Rebecca Somehouse of St Louis, Missouri and Tamera Shields of Neosho, Missouri; 14 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Music was provided by Laura Parks, organist, and Scott Schulte, soloist. Musical selections included "What a friend we have in Jesus", "The old rugged cross" and " In the garden."
Casketbearers were Elwin Henry, Gary Frost, Gerald Riley, Bruce Olds, Charles Frost II, and Gene Young. Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett was in charge of arrangements.
