The following was taken from the book "THE SQUIRES FAMILY of WESTERN
VIRGINIA" by Joy Gregoire Gilchrist. 1987.
John Squires and wife Mary (Fortney) Squires had a 17.5 acre farm on a small stream that drained into Sandy Creek. In 1869 John willed the landto his daughters Eliza and Jane; Jane's heirs sold it to Isaac Martin in1903 (DB 53/254 & 55/400). The deed to the land was conveyed to JohnSquires by Price and Fanny Pitzer 2 April 1869. All in the county ofBarbour and State of West Virginia, Cove Township,
Witnesseth:
That for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred and
seventy nine dollars and ninety cents in hand paid the receipt
thereof is hereby acknowledged, the said Price Pitzer and
Fanny his wife, do this day bargain and sell to the said John
Squires, a certain Tract or parcel of land lying and being in
the County of Barbour & State of West Virginia and bounded
as follows: begining at a Stone running thence N36 E23 poles
to a Stone; thence N89 E12 poles to a Stone, then S78.5 E29
poles to a stone; thence N36 E14 & 1/5 poles to a Stone, ?67
E39 1/6 poles to a Stone; thence S35 W48 to a Stone; thence
N70 W83 poles to the begining, containing seventeen acres and
one half and 15 poles, more or less.
The date this deed was made, 2 April 1869, was the date that John Squires wrote his will and signed the Article of Agreement with his sons Wesleyand Asa Squires (on p. 44a), probably negotiated because Wesley hadbought land in Brown County, Indiana, and was preparing to move hisfamily there.
J&M Letter received 4-4-1994, page 4 (page 41 out of the Book "THE
SQUIRES FAMILY").
Price Pitzer probably was selling the seveteen acres because he to was moving to Brown County, Indiana. The exact date he moved is not known.
Inventory of Price Pitzer's estate June 20, 1877, 40 acres N 1/2, S 1/2 of NW 1/4, Section 16, T9, R2.
HEMSTAD-2*56 Lived in Randolph Co., VA 1840 and Barbour Co., VA. 1850.
