Individual:
Joseph Dorr, was a civilian, and followed industrial and social
pursuits of peace, though he did serve in the New York State Militiafor a time during the war of 1812.
He put in seven years of his youth in Boston learning the trade of ship carpenter and joiner, and in after years of constructed a numberof the largest ships on Lake Erie.
Joseph was blessed with a rich tenor voice, which he prized and cultivated; and was a valued member of the choir of Old South Baptistchurch of Boston. Later he became a director, and led many choirs. He never lost his smooth clear voice to the day of his death; and oneof the sweet memories of the writer's life was that of hearing himsing on the bed of his last sickness some of his favorite hymens. Hewas also deacon in the Baptist church, the church of his choice. Andso the Dorr graves were scattered from Boston to the banks of theMississippi river, and from sunny Florida to China. He was buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery, in Bellevue, Jackson
County, IA.
Marriage:
Her sister Deborah married Joseph's brother, James.
