Notes
Individual:
Hon. Joseph Dorr, studied Divinity and preached occasionally for
several years. His exertions in the cause of the country during theRevolution were great. He was one of the Commissioners to demand ofthe Mandamus Councilors of the County of Worcester a surrender of thecommission. From 1773 to 1780 he filled several town and stateoffices- was member of the Secret Committee- Member of the Committeeof Safety- Member of the Committee of Correspondence - Member of theLegislature. After the treaty of peace he was appointed Justice ofthe court of Common Pleas - and Judge of Probate - and held otheroffices until the close of his life.

JUDGE JOSEPH DORR
Judge Joseph Dorr of Mendon, MA., was born in that town on May 24, 1730, the only son of Reverend Joseph (A. B. 1711) and Mary(Rawson) Dorr. At college he held Hollis, Hopkinton and Stoughtonscholarships, and when he took his M.A. he had a speaking part in theCommencement exercises, the affirmative of "An certiorari sint quaeDiscursu, quam quae Sensu, percipiuntur."
During his college vacations, Dorr had kept the Mendon School "by Spells." After graduation, he studied for the ministry and preachedwhere occasion offered, although his circle was narrowed by anaffliction of boils "so situated" as to make travel difficult. He wasat Provincetown for a while, but when his father began to fail hereturned to Mendon where on December 24, 1767, he married Catherine, daughter of Nathan Buckman (A. b. 1721. He quickly began to take overthe town offices of assessor, clerk, treasurer, and selectman, and in1764 was sent to the House of Representatives where he opposed ThomasHutchinson (A. b. 1727). In this he represented the wishes of histown, for it instructed him to vote against making "any Compensationto the sufferers in Boston by Mobs." However, in 1767 he quitted thepatriot ranks to vote for a proposed tax on liquor, and the next yearwas appointed a Justice of the Peace by Governor Bernard, and was notreturned to the House.
If this represents political wavering on Dorr's part, he redeemed himself when in March, 1773, he reported for a town committee a longlist of resolutions, which in substance have a remarkable resemblanceto the preamble of the Declaration of Independence. They begin:"Resolved, That a Right to Liberty and Property (which is one of theNatural Means of Self Preservation) is absolutely unalienable, and cannever, lawfully, be given up by committees of Correspondence andInspection, and on that to obtain the resignation of the MandamusCouncilors. As a Justice of the Peace he happily signed a promise tostay all proceedings of the Court of General Sessions when ordered todo so by the Convention of Committees of Correspondence. In 1774 thetown sent him to the First Provincial Congress, and in 1776, to thereconstituted House of Representatives. The new government promptlyappointed him a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas of WorcesterCounty.
During the war period, Dorr spent, he calculated, three hundred days a year in uncompensated public service, living off his farm. AsTown Clerk, he copied the text of the Declaration of Independence intothe town records, but he continued to submit uncomplainingly to thedemands for his services made by the town and the Proprietors. In1779 he attended the Constitutional Convention, and the next year heaccepted election to the Council, sending this note of thanks to SamAdams (A. b. 1740):
I am very sensible of the dignity conferred upon me by this Election, and feel the warmest emotions of Gratitude to the HonorableGentlemen of the General Assembly for their suffrages on the occasion;at The same time, conscious of my Inability to discharge the importantDuties of this elevated station with that benefit and real service tothe public as I could earnestly wish, I shall enter upon this arduousbusiness with great Diffidence and some degree of Reluctance. TheCircumstances of my Family and domestic Affairs are such as willrender my Constant attendance at Court extremely inconvenient. Idoubt not therefore that the Honorable Board will readily grant me allreasonable Indulgence.
Under the new Constitution he was twice elected to the State Senate, and by virtue of these offices he sat as a member of the Boardof Overseers.
For the rest of his life Dorr moved around Worcester County in a bewildering way. In 1781 he sold his farm in Mendon and moved toWard, now Auburn, while looking around for a choice farm to purchase. Two years later he was back in Mendon leading the incorporation of theFirst Congregational Society in the First Parish, but when he wasappointed Judge of Probate in 1784, he was described as an inhabitantof Ward. In 1797 he moved to Leicester where he bought the housebuilt by Thomas Steel (A. b. 1730). In 1800 he resigned from theProbate Court, and in 1801 from the court of Common Pleas. Thefollowing year he moved to Brookfield, where he died on October 31,1808. His eight children had no Harvard connections.
He was buried in the Brookfield Cemetery, Brookfield, Worcester
County, MA.He graduated from Harvard College, Cambridge, Middlesex County, MA.
Appointed for two terms.
