m28 Feb.1788Jacob Mann Isaac Arnold was a resident of Orange County for some ten years from

about 1749 to before 1759. There is no record of his having been a
property owner but he does appear on the list of tithables in 1752, 1753,
and 1755. Extant lists are incomplete so omissions are not significant. He
is mentioned in one or another connection in the Court Order Records every
year from 1749 to 1759.
In November 1750 Isaac Arnold was granted a license to "Keep an
ordinary at his home being the place where John Ingham lately lived"().
George Wells and John Goff were his securities. This license was renewed
again in November 1752 with Joseph Williams and William Willis as
securities. In July 1753 there was a complaint against Isaac Arnold for
"suffering gaming and other disorderly doings in his ordinary:. His license
was revoked and a subsequent petition for renewal denied.
Further court orders list sundry complaints against Isaac Arnold for
bad debts including gambling. These mounted to the extent that in June
1757 it is recorded that he had "removed out of the colony". In 1758 and
1759 further court action reduced some of debt by attachment against
accessible estate.
Before his leaving the colony there was a petition in Feb. 1756 by "Isaac
Arnold proprietor of land on one side of the Rapidan River and Rush
Hudson and John Ransdall proprietors on the other side in (Orange) - (for
the) building of a water grist mill". It was ordered that this petition be
examined by a jury. No further action.
In May and again in July 1754 Isaac Arnold petitioned on behalf of a Jane
Arnold as her next friend against Robert Boston for slander. One several
occasions one James Arnold appears as representative or surety on behalf
of Isaac Arnold.
Isaac Arnold is listed as one of the securities for the executors of the
estate of George Pettey on 28 May 1752. In the division of the estate of
George Pettey according to court order of 25 Apr. 1755 reference is made
to James Arnold as marrying the widow, Jemima. No further evidence of
this Jemima or of such a marriage having occurred appears. ()
The parentage and the family of this Isaac Arnold cannot be determined
conclusively by any specific evidence to be found in the record. However,
the overall circumstantial picture is sufficient to indicate that he was a
younger son of Thomas Arnold of King George County. A comprehensive
examination of all other Arnold families in Virginia at this time finds no
alternate place where this Isaac might belong.
In King George Co., VA Deed Bk 1A p 259-60 there is recorded an
indenture between Isaac Arnold Sr. of Hanover Parish in King George County
and Thomas Arnold of same, son of the said Isaac..in consideration of
natural love..hath granted unto Thomas Arnold and Mary his now wife..all
that plantation where Thomas now liveth together with 50 acres of land
during the time of their natural lives and from and after the death of
Thomas and Mary.. to belong to Humphrey Arnold eldest son of Thomas".
This infers that there was at least one younger son of Thomas Arnold. This
younger son is believed to have been Isaac of Orange.
In the first petition for an ordinary licence by Isaac Arnold one of his
securities was John Goff formerly of King George county. Records identify
him as a brother of Margaret Goff, first wife of Isaac Arnold the
grandfather of Isaac of Orange. In the second ordinary license petition one
of the securities was William Willis , son of Wm. Willis of King George and
grandson of John Willis frequently noted as an adjacent landowner to Isaac
Arnold of Hanover Parish, King George county.
One of the partners in the petition for a water grist mill, Rush Hudson
son of Rush Hudson Sr. of Hanover Parish and his wife, Sarah. Sarah was
first married to William Willis of Hanover Parish.
The James Arnold who appears in the Orange Court orders along with
Isaac was most likely the son of Isaac of King George and Spotsylvania
counties, brother of Thomas Arnold, and hence first cousin of Isaac Arnold.
The Jane Arnold who appears is unidentified but might have been a sister of
Isaac of Orange.
After the departure of Isaac from Orange, there is no specific record of
his destination. Both William Willis and Rush Hudson Jr. with whom he was
association, are known to have moved to South Carolina about the same
time. It would not have been unlikely for Isaac to have lived near one or both
of these friends. There is no record to be found of the specific residence
of Isaac in South Carolina.
During the few years that Isaac Arnold and his family lived in Orange
they lived as tenants of Alexander Spotswood on a small holding being a
part of the 40,000 acre Spotswood grant extending along the Rapidan
river. Orange County road orders which mention Isaac Arnold and his
friends referred to above indicate that all lived quite near the Rapidan
towards to east end of Chestnut (now Clarke) mountain. It may well be also
that Isaac Arnold held some of the Spotswood land as a tenant in Culpeper
across the Rapidan.
The two older sons of Isaac, Humphrey and Reuben, were born in Orange
and younger children evidently in South Carolina. The date of death of Isaac
is unknown but it would have been between the probable date of birth of the
youngest child in 1768 and the date of return of the family to Virginia
about 1774.
Evidently the fortunes of the orphaned family in South Carolina were
unfortunate. There seems to have been no relatives of either Isaac or his
wife, Elizabeth, living there. Friends were few and of little support. Under
these circumstances as soon as they were able the two older sons came to
Virginia to find old friends and new opportunity. Both had acquired skills as
blacksmiths. With favorable prospects the whole family returned shortly
before the beginning of the Revolution - probably about 1774.
This return is well documented in the records of post Revolutionary
British Mercantile Claims. When the Revolution broke out many of the
merchants in Virginia fled to their home base in England leaving behind many
unpaid accounts. After the settlement of the war there was agreement
that these merchants could submit claims for payment. The records of
these claims are still extant and have been published recently (). Two
specific claims relevant to the Isaac Arnold family read as follows:
The first, "Elizabeth Arnold, Orange. A Mrs. Arnold lived in Culpeper very
near the Orange line and moved to Kentucky about 1784 possessed of but
little property, if any, as she returned from one of the Carolinas very poor
about the time the debt was said to have been contracted and lived with
one of her sons, industrious mechanics who, it is thought, acquired what
property was in their possession." The second, "She removed to Kentucky
about 1784, possessed of little if any property, and was supported by her
sons who were industrious young men, blacksmiths by trade."
The debts would have been incurred prior to the Revolution, i.e. before
1776, and the claims as submitted were based on the knowledge of
contemporaries of this period. It is to be noted that in these statements,
Elizabeth, appears in effect as the head of the family. Had her husband
been living at the time, he would almost inevitably have been referenced.
Wile the identity of the parentage of Elizabeth, wife of Isaac Arnold,
remains undetermined it is probable that she was a member of one of the
families earlier in Hanover Parish of King George county neighbors of Isaac
Arnold Sr. and which moved to the same are of Orange where Isaac and
Elizabeth resided.
Among these families was that of Rush Hudson, the elder, whose son
was a prospective partner of Isaac for a water grist mill. The widow of the
first Rush Hudson, Sarah, moved with her fourth husband, Edward
Turberville, to Orange where this husband died. Her oldest Hudson son,
Joshua, appears frequently in the Orange County court orders as a near
neighbor of Isaac Arnold. The second Hudson son, was Rush Jr. mentioned
above. The youngest Hudson son, David, established his home on the slopes
of Cedar Mountain on the north side of the Rapidan in Culpeper County.
When Humphrey and Reuben Arnold returned to Virginia, they renewed
the earlier association with the Hudson family. By deed dated 13 March
1777 () Humphrey Arnold obtained land in Culpeper adjacent to the land
earlier obtained by David Hudson. Subsequently by deed dated 20 Jan. 1782
() David Hudson transfers to Reuben Arnold land a portion of his original
purchase adjacent to the land of Humphrey Arnold. The Isaac Arnold family
doubtless lived on this Humphrey Arnold land until their move to Kentucky.
Humphrey Arnold had an early interest in Kentucky. By 1780 he had his
first acquisition of 500 acres (). As noted in the British Mercantile Claims,
the family came to Kentucky in 1784. Reuben and his wife, Margaret,
daughter of David Hudson came in 1787. Early in the same year Humphrey
and his younger brother, John, appear in the Lincoln County tax lists. They
were already in that part of Lincoln which became Garrard County. In 1788
Humphrey acquired 641 acres in Garrard (Lincoln) County.
Humphrey Arnold of Garrard died in the fall of 1806. On 21 Oct. 1806
the following record appears in the Garrard Court Minutes: "A paper or
instrument of writing purporting to be the last will and testament of
Humphrey Arnold dec'd and which was cont'd at last court was again taken
up wherefore sundry witnesses were sworn and ex'd and each party heard
by court. The court after mature deliberation are of opinion that the said
writing shall not be received and recorded as the last will and testament of
the said Humphrey Arnold, deceased." It is possible that there was some
disagreement among the heirs which contributed to this decision.
At the Court session the following day the "administration of the estate
of Humphrey Arnold, dec'd, (was) granted to John Arnold and Benj. Moberly
whereupon they together with Frederick Brown, John Hann (Jacob Mann),
Armistead Reed, John Bourn and Reuben Arnold, their securities, Exec. and
Ackn. their bond - - - -" In the subsequent documentation involving
inventory, sale of real and personal property, it is evident that Humphrey
must have been the elder brother in a family headed at this time by the
mother, Elizabeth.
The estate records indicate that Humphrey had no family of his own,
either wife or children. One illustrative item in the record of the sale of
Humphrey's estate is the purchase of some two hundred acres of land
being the farm and dwelling place of Humphrey Arnold, dec'd, by John
Bourne, son-in-law of Reuben Arnold. Had there been a widow or children of
Humphrey this particular sale of the homestead would have involved their
interests in some specific manner. Footnotes

1.The date and place is uncertain. As noted in the discussion below it is
probable the family moved from Virginia to South Carolina where Isaac died.
The date of 1770 or a bit later is likely since the family would have made
the return move to Virginia not long after his death. 2.Marriage date estimated from date of birth of oldest child. The marriage

was probably in Orange County, but could have been earlier and in King
George. 3.While her parents are unknown one speculation is that her mother's

name was Lucy. This is suggested since both sons, Reuben and John, and
daughter, Sarah, had daughters named Lucy and no other possible sources
for this name can be found. 4.The date of birth is estimated from the probable date of marriage. She

was doubtless of a family from King George County or possibly Orange. 5.On 26 Jan. 1811 Elizabeth Arnold signed a deed transferring land to "my

loving son" John. Garrard Co., KY Deeds Vol D p 71. No further record
appears. 6.The identities of the members of this family are indicated by the

following:
Indenture made 25 August 1810 between John Shepherd, John Arnold,
Elizabeth Arnold, Richard Berry, John Henderson and Sally his wife, Caleb
Berry, Lucy Moore, Jacob Mann and Polly his wife, John Bourne, Armistead
Reid, Benjamin Moberly, David H. Arnold, George Bryant, Isaac Arnold and
Peggy Arnold, heirs and legal representatives of Humphrey Arnold dec'd, of
the one part and Matthias House of Garrard County of the other part, for
500 pounds, 201 acres and 11 poles in Garrard County on Dick's River and
other water courses mentioned. Signed: John Shepherd, John Arnold,
Elizabeth Arnold, Jacob Mann, Richard Berry, Lucy Moore, Caleb Berry, Wm.
Bourne, D. H. Arnold, Armistead Read, B. Moberly, George Bryant, Isaac
Arnold, Peggy Arnold. Garrard County Deeds, Book E, p 415-17.
This document lists not only the mother, Elizabeth, but also the heirs of
Reuben Arnold dec'd - John Bourne, Armistead Reid, Benjamin Moberly, David
Arnold, George Bryant, Isaac Arnold and his widow, Peggy Arnold. It also
lists the heirs of Sarah (Arnold)Berry - Richard Berry, John Henderson and
Sally his wife, Caleb Berry, and Lucy Moore. 7.For further information see N30 Reuben Arnold Family Group Record
8.Culpeper Co., VA marriage records.
9.This daughter, Sarah, may have married into the same Berry family of

Virginia as did Benjamin Hudson mentioned above. In the settlement of the
estate of Humphrey in Garrard Co., she appears only as "Sarah Berry,
dec'd". Her husband was possibly a brother of Jemima Berry, wife of
Benjamin Hudson, and son of John and Susannah (Berry) of Culpeper County.
This Berry family lived in the same neighborhood as David Hudson. (For
further information see John Berry family group record).
A final document relevant to this family is the land transfer in 1810. (See
footnote 5. above) This lists all the heirs including among others Richard
Berry, John Henderson and Sally his wife, Lucy Moore and Caleb Berry who
are evidently the heirs of Sarah Berry. Also listed are John Shepherd and
Jacob Mann and the heirs of Reuben Arnold, deceased. This implies that
Sarah had at least four Berry children: Richard, Sarah m John Henderson,
Lucy m ? Moore and Caleb. 10.Lincoln Co., KY marriage records. John Shepherd remained in Garrard

County until after 1810 as indicated by county records. The only one of
this name in central Kentucky, however, married apparently a second wife
and died in 1840 in Shelby County. His will mentions a wife, Nancy, a son,
William, and several daughters. Shelby Co., KY Will Bk 14 p 322. 11.For further information see N60:5 John Arnold Family Group Record.
12.Madison Co., KY marriage records. See also John Arnold family group

record. 13.Lincoln Co., KY marriage records. A Jacob Mann appears for a few years

after the marriage in Garrard County records. An individual of that name
appears as head of a family in 1800 in Christian Co., KY and in 1810 in
Nicholas Co., KY. For further information see N60:6 Mary Arnold - Jacom

Newman Arnold Hall. I am not sure that this Isaac is the head of this
family as we do not have any concrete evidence. There was a Isaac that
was a witness in several legal documents in Culpeper, County, Va where this
family lived before coming to Kentucky. Angie Clay Arnold, a
daughter if Henry Clay Arnold, remebers that her grandfather talks of
Isaac being the father of the family that came to Kentucky. (1995)
