\par "In the autumn of 1839 Mason Goff visited Crawford County, Illinois, where on October 15, 1839 he entered 442 acres of land. In the spring of 1840 he brought his family to Illinois. It is said that they came by boat down the Ohio River and up the Wabash to Crawford County where they settled in Honey Creek Township." Mason's wife often spoke of the journey down the Ohio. "She stated that they carried a rather large amount of gold contained in a carpetbag. Mason Goff immediately purchased, on April 27, 1840, more land to the extent of 335 acres which, added to his initial purchase, increased his holdings to 777 acres. This acreage consisted of eleven separate tracts, widely scattered over Honey Creek Township. Then again later, in 1847, '49, '50, '51, and '53, other purchases were made from the government until in all, he had entered 1217 acres...
