Individual:
= August 4, 1692; Sunday. "Brother Peter Cloyse & Samuel Nurse &his wife & John Tarbell & his wife "having absented themselffrom Communion, and very rarely, except Brother Nurse",attending Public Worship, Brother Nathaniel Putnam and the twoDeacons, with the Pastor, are this day ("after some discourse")appointed a Committee "to discourse with the said absentersabout it." (Danvers Church Records) August 31, 1692; "Brother Tarbell proves sick unmeet fordiscourse. Brother Cloyse hard to be found at home being oftenwith his wife in Prison in Ipswich for Witchcraft & BrotherNurse & sometimes his wife attends our publick meeting, & he theSacrament. 9/11/1692. Upon all which we choose to wait farther.(Danvers Church Records) "The opposition to Mr. Parris was led by connections of theTowne family. The interminable quarrels which covered a periodof five years consisted of intense bickerings between the twosides in the village, those against Parris, and those for him.The latter, it must be admitted, were always in the majority. The Towne family connections were Peter Cloyes, who had been anoriginal covenater with Samuel Parris, and who, after his wife'simprisonment in 1692, became a bitter opponent; John Tarbell, ason in law of Rebecca Nurse, who had been a supporter of Parrisbefore the witchcraft proceedings; SamuelNurse, Rebecca's eldestson; and Thomas Wilkins Jr., who was married to a daughter ofEdmund Towne, the long dead brother of the three Towne sisters,Rebecca Nurse, Mary Esty, and Sarah Cloyes. Their implacableresentment against Samuel Parris eventually bore fruit andfinally led to his being discredited and asked to leave, but notbefore calling into the fray John Higginson and John Hale who,as we have seen, had already shown themselves to have been sorryfor their part in the witchcraft proceedings; and Nicholas Noyeswho sat on the fence for a while but finally capitulated whenIncrease Mather and other Boston ministers were brought in tosettle the dispute; and civil arbitrators were asked to givetheir opinion as well." (Currents of Malice - Persis W.McMillen) February 5, 1693; Committee chosen to discourse with theirtownfolk, Samuel Nurse, John Tarbell and Thomas Wilkins, Jr.,about 'their withdrawing from the Lord's table'. The response tothis committee was read aloud by Samuel Nurse at Rev. Parris'house on 2/16/1693. (Currents of Malice - Persis W. McMillen) February 7, 1693; John Tarbell, Samuel Nurse and Thomas Wilkins,Jr., went to Rev. Parris house to speak to him about theirdispleasure with him, and on 2/8/1693 "Brother Peter Cloyes camefrom Boston to me with the very same objections, whom I answeredafter the like manner," that he, Parris, did not yet "seesufficient grounds to vary" his opinion. Shortly thereafter allof them came back again bringing with them William Way tocontinue their discourse. (Currents of Malice - Persis W.McMillen) April 14, 1693; Samuel Nurse, John Tarbell, Francis Nurse andThomas Wilkins with Joseph Hutchinson, Sr., went again to Rev.Parris' house to discuss their displeasure with him as minister.Parris did not have time to discourse with them that day so theymet again on 4/20. On this date they were unable to come to anagreement so they met again the following morning. On 4/30Parris brought out the complaints against him in open church andset up a meeting to allow the 'dissenters' (who were nownon-church members) to speak to his bretheran of theircomplaints against him. This meeting took place on 5/18/1693without an agreement made between the parties. Matters reachedsuch an impasse by midsummer that forty-nine of the Salemvillagers addressed a petition to Governor Phips about thenon-settlement of their differences and the wish for impartialcitizens to decide the fate of their minister. The petition wassigned those who were most injured by the witchcraft trials andincluded Peter Cloyes, John Tarbell, Thomas Wilkins, SamuelNurse, Thomas Preston, and Daniel Andrew. In October ministersfrom neighboring towns got involved in the dispute and met withsome of the dissenters as well as Rev. Parris. On 11/5 anothermeeting was scheduled with message to Tarbell and Nurse toinform Peter Cloyes "if he be not too remote". On 11/13/1693 thegroup met again, including Peter Cloyes, their petition was tocall in an outside counsel. This airing of grievance by the twoopposing factions continued until 10/11/1696 when Parris lefttown. (Currents of Malice - Persis W. McMillen) 1694; "Samuel Nurse, Rebecca's son, said he had withdrawn fromthe Lord's table at the Village church because of : "Theapprehension of danger of ourselves being accused as the Devil'sinstrument to molest and afflict the persons complaining, weseeing those whom we had reason to esteem better than ourselvesthus accused..."
