"James L. Armstrong was born in Greenbrief County, Virginia April 2, 1782 and died
April 5, 1868. He was buried in the New Hope Church Cemetery in Bedford
County. He married in 1804 to Sophia Smith. She died in 1850 and was the
daughter of Major Robert Smith and Mary Jarratt, who settled at Salem, Rutherford
County. Dr. Armstrong settled near Old Jefferson. Jonathan Phillips sold Jefferson
town Lot #60 to Dr. James L. Armstrong, October 9, 1804. He received a
Rutherford County milita commission of Captain on October 16, 1807. Dr.
Armstrong purchased town Lot #36 in 1808. He was practicing medicine in Old
Jefferson in 1810. He was appointed foreman of the first Grand Jury of the Circuit
Court for Rutherford County, 1810. He served his country as surgeon during the
War of 1812 under General Andrew Jackson. He moved to Bedford County in
1814. He had 13 children by two wives. He was listed in the Rutherford County tax
list for 1809 owning 40 acres, three town lots, and the 1811 tax lists owning 115 3/4
acres and three town lots. He was listed in the 1810 and 1820 census of Rutherford
County. He was a commissioner for Rutherford County January 13, 1812."
