Individual:
Retired at the end of the school year in 1967, after 32 years of teaching. Taught 19 years i
n Jasper schools. Her first 13 years of teaching was at Evadale, Erin and Temple Springs (all in Jasper County). She graduated from Sour Lake High School. She attended Lamar State College, Sam Houston State College and received her BS degree from Stephen F. Austin College. She was a member of the Jasper County Teachers' Association, State Teachers' Association, American Business Women's Association of which she is past president, and Jasper Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She is an active member of the First Methodist Church of Jasper and has served as president of the Couples class and the Philathea Class of the Sunday School. Her special interests are traveling, coin collecting, reading, cooking and her family. She has traveled extensively during summer vacations, and expects to travel more after retirement and at a more leisurely pace.

The following is a radio program done about Bell. "Bernice Isabell Cowart Dickerson, bette r known as Bell, is one of those rare ladies. Her character, values, and leadership have influenced many lives. Her rpresence is a comfort.

Born in Silsbee, Texas on July 9, 1905, Bell later moved with her family to Sabine County, wh ere she attended school in Pineland and Bronson. She received her BS degree from Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College in 1939 and her Professional lifetime certificate in 1955.

Bell taught in Evadale in 1927-1929, in Erin from 1930-1940, in Bulah Springs during 1940-194 1, and in Jasper Independent School District from 1941 until she retired in 1967.

Her students remember her firmness, her high standards of scholastic achievement, and alway s her fairness. Her social studies calsses came alive as she shared many collected items from her travels. Knowledge of world geography became a reality as her students traced the location of their loved one on different fronts during WWII. Bell would give of her time and energy to any worthwhile project.

Presently, Bell is president of "Jasper Jewels" is a member of Order of Eastern Star, is secr etary-treasurer of Jasper County Committee on Aging, and is Ombudsman member for dDeep East Texas Council of Government. For this last duty, she had to take special training, which qualified her for nursing home protective service. She does countless volunteer jobs, many of which are unknown to the public. Bell giver of herself, not for credit, but for the good of others.

She is a member of First Methodist Churc, member of Wesley Bible Sunday School, class, an d a member of United Methodist Women.

Bell and her husband "Steve" are at home at 307 Lindsey Street in Jasper. The warmth of he r love characterizes their home while the flavor of her cookies and punch leaves her guests with a good taste. They usually leave with a little hand-crocheted novelty as a token of her thoughtfulness.

Her sons, C.W. and James Hinton Dickerson, and their families are belssed with the mother the y have in Bell."
