Individual:
BIOGRAPHY: Personal Notes by S. Matthews (Great-Granddaughter): Pearly
and Nola lived at the end of 4mile holler near Branchland WV. Every onecalled Pearly either P.J. or in the kid's case, "Pa". Nola was "Granny"to all us kids.
BIOGRAPHY: Granny and Pa lived in a modest but modern home, their bedroom was downstairs off of the living room, and two other bedrooms werelocated upstairs. Pa worked the fields every summer, acres of sweet cornwere planted around the house and Granny worked a small garden off theback of the house. Even after he suffered a stroke Pa would still get outon his tractor in the fields.
BIOGRAPHY: Granny spent most of her summers canning and freezing produce from her gardens. They also had a smokehouse out back where they wouldsmoke meat from their slaughtered hogs and beef cattle.
BIOGRAPHY: Early in the mornings, they would walk down to the barn where the milk cows were, there were only a few that I remember. There wasalways fresh milk in the fridge; we would have to skim the fat off thetop before we could drink it. My sister and I would gather up eggs fromthe chicken's that were kept in a large coop right off the side of thehouse every morning.
BIOGRAPHY: Pa had been a schoolteacher and was a Baptist Minister, although I don't know for sure if he had been "ordained", I do know thathe had overseen many a wedding in that area. He had a massive collectionof hymnals; he kept them on a bookshelf that encompassed one wall of theliving room floor to ceiling.
BIOGRAPHY: Granny loved to cook, she taught me how to can fruits and veggies and how to make homemade jam, although my canning techniques haveprogressed through the years, I never could make her biscuits!
BIOGRAPHY: In the early 1980's Granny and Pa were "taking care" of William Webb, Granny's father, "Pa Bill" was suffering from Alzheimer'sat this point and was a handful! I visited with them in the summer of1982, although "Pa Bill" knew I was his great great granddaughter, heinsisted on calling me "Stella", Stella was my grandmother and had diedin 1964.
