The family name was Braun, 10 Jun 200114:47:39The 1900 census lists John's parents as born in Germany, but the 1910 lists them as born in Pennsylvania.

I've scoured the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census for German Browns that might be our family. Oral tradition is very strong that he was born in Decorah, Iowa in 1859.

The only John Brown I've been able to find in the 1880 census who is born in about 1859 in Iowa to German immigrants is the son of a carpenter in Jackson, Iowa. I'm carrying them as separate people.

There is, however, a Pennsylvania Brown couple living in Canoe Twp, just outside Decorah with a 1 year old son John, the only infant John Brown I find of either German or Pennsylvania parentage.4 Mar 200612:41:03
