Based on the claim that WHB was 3 when his father died at the age of 38 9 Feb 20046:49:51Tentative unit ID 9 Feb 20046:50:05Thomas was discaaharged from Co. I, 34th Ill Inf at Nashville. The 34th didn't reach Nashville for the first time until March 1862. So his service was at least Sep 1861 - Mar 1862. The unit returned to Nashville in Sep, Nov, and Dec 1862, and March of 1864. He could have been discharged at any of these times. Get records. 9 Feb 20046:50:13Gam (Grace H. Stull) originally told me that Wm. H. Burrows's father was also named William Henry. 9 Feb 20046:48:53According to Cathy Cramer: W. H. Burrows's father was Thomas Burrows, who was married to Martha Lowell. Martha (Lowell) Burrows remarried a Knott. Wm H's grandfather (or more likely his great- grandfather) was the immigrant. He was supposed to have been the eldest son of an Irish Catholic lord who married a Protestant girl and was disowned. The Protestant wife was said to have stood at the manor with babe in arms in hopes of being seen by the Lord. She never was. After a time the embarassed son decided to emmigrate to America.5 Mar 200014:43:011900 census for William Henry Burrows list his parents as born in VT, but his sister Lulu's 1900 census gives her father b. Ireland.26 Jun 20053:12:23So far I've found 3 Thomas Burrowses in Illinois regements: Co. K 10th Ill (3yr) BURROWS, Thomas Private Edwardsville Aug 14, 1861 Mustered out Aug 31, 1864 Co. I 34th Ill Inf BURROWS, Thomas Private Wysox Sep 7, 1861 Disch. at Nashville, Tenn Co. K 104th Ill Inf BURROWS, Thomas Private Peru Aug 27, 1862 Died at Chattanooga, Oct 24, 1863 The Wysox Thomas, was an Irish-born farm laborer on a farm next door to some Bartletts in Carroll County. Martha's first husband, Byron Bartlett, and their children were said to be "of Savanah" also in Carroll County. On this flimsy evidence, I'm now hypothesizing that this is our Thomas. 24 Jul 20067:59:21It looks like Thomas may be younger than I thought. I'm going with him being an Irsih-born farmhand from Wysox, Illinois, who joined Company "I" 34th Illinois Infantry in 1861. JimB14 Nov 200310:44:45According to personal papers and family oral history: William Henry Burrows was born on July 25 1864 (or possibly 1865), probably in Fulton, Illinois and left home at the age of 14. According to him, his father died at the age of 38 after two years' illness. He did not know the specific cause of death, but listed the general cause as Army life. It seems probable that Thomas served in the Civil War, probably in the Union Army. According to Helen Burrows Carlton, William Henry's daughter, his father "died in the Civil War when WHB was three". This would mean that Thomas was born in about 1829. BUT Thomas appears in the 1870 census, with son William listed as age 5, so it's pretty clear that aunt Helen was wrong about WHB's age at his father's death. This census lists Thomas's age as 25. If WHB was right and his father died at 38, then that would be about 1882-1883, 13 years after the census. On the other hand, if I'm right and Thomas is the one who lived next door to Philander Bartlett in the 1860 census, then he was 17 then. Given that Martha only aged 8 years between 1860 and 1870, it's reasonable that Thomas did as well. This would mean he was born in about 1842 and would be 38 more in the 1880-1881 timeframe. Marath has remarried and both WHB and his sister Lulu have taken their stepfather's name by 1880, which would suggest that their father was dead and not just divorced or desterted. (Note that WHB probably didn't leave home at age 14 as he is 15 at home in the 1870 census.) I would thus guess that Thomas died before he was 38, and while WHB was young, some time in the 1870s.25 Feb 200615:12:50According to personal papers and family oral history: William Henry Burrows was born on July 25 1864 (or possibly 1865), probably in Fulton, Illinois. It seems probable that Thomas served in the Civil War, probably in the Union Army. According to Helen Burrows Carlton, William Henry's daughter, his father "died in the Civil War when WHB was three". This would mean that Thomas was born in about 1829. William Henry had three siblings--two brothers and a sister. The sister appears to be the oldest. Martha was 30 and 32 when William Henry's brothers were born. If Martha was about the same age as her husband, they would have been born in 1860 and 1862. I'm guessing that the sister was born two years before that. She died at the age of 34.17 Oct 199922:45:44Research Notes: Check the Illinois state library for farm maps for Thomas and Martha Burrows. According to Gam (Grace Harriet Stull Burrows), William Henry Burrows's father was also William Henry, and was married to a Lowell. According to Cathy Cramer, W. H. Burrows's father was Thomas Burrows, who was married to Martha Lowell. Martha (Lowell) Burrows remarried a Knott. The 1890 census for William Henry Burrows list his parents as born in VT. According to Cathy Cramer, Wm H's grandfather (or more likely his great- grandfather) was the immigrant. He was supposed to have been the eldest son of an Irish Catholic lord who married a Protestant girl and was disowned. The Protestant wife was said to have stood at the manor with babe in arms in hopes of being seen by the Lord. She never was. After a time the son decided to emmigrate to America.17 Oct 199922:46:57Martha, Thomas and their children's dates are calculated from a number age relationships found in insurance and marriage documents and family tradition. WHB's birthday is July 25, but the years is given as both 1864 and 1865. According to WHB, his father died at the age of 38 after two years' illness. According to Helen Burrows Carlton, WHB's daughter, his father "died in the Civil War when WHB was three". According to some insurance papers, Martha was 30 and 32 when WHB's brothers were born. Illinois marriage records show that Marth Married Byran Bartlett on 21 SEP 1854, and was a minor at the time. Jackie Drybread shows Martha and Thomas having three children, born between 1857 and 1861. Combining these alleged facts, I've come up with date ranges for the folks involved. These should provide a context for searching out the relevent primary sources.14 Apr 20026:31:34
