Susan Kyle was born July 27, 1834 in Columbiana County, Ohio, and died April
14, 1915, at Plainview, Nebraska, aged 80 years, 8 monts, and 17 days.
In October 1849 she married Thos. Slater and lived in Williams county, Ohio
until 1872, when they moved to Adams county, Iowa. Here after a year Mr. Slaterdied April 14, 1873, just 42 years to the day before her death.
To this union was born seven children, Mary E; Henry Wm; Samuel C; Joseph;
Maggie; Nettie; and Lottie J. Of these Samuel died in infancy and Mary and Lottiein mature life.
December 27, 1873, she was married to the Rev. Moses Miller Case, a minister
of the Baptist church, and with him served pastorates in Iowa and Nebraska. Tothis union was born a boy, willie, who died in his third year.
Mr. Case had a family of seven children, five of whom were at home when he
married Mrs. Case and came to call her "mother" Rhoda J., Mary Elizabeth, AliceA. Nancy C. and Bertha R.
In the spring of 1886 Mr. Case and his family came to Nebraska and located on a
farm northwest of Plainview. About two years ago they at this point there is a biggap so I will resume as this does. About forty grandchildren survive and an equalnumber of great grandchildren.
The grandchildren who live in this vicinity are Mrs. M C Barnes; Archie Bomar;
Leroy Bomar, Mrs J A Barnes, Raymond Bomar, Mrs. Robert b/Pennington, andTheodore Bomar of Plainview and Mrs. Earnest Miller, Mrs. Clark Fulton, OthoHolmes, Clyde Holmes, Grace Holmes, Lawrence Holmes, Gilbert Holmes, RebaHolmes and Kenneth Holmes of Foster.

1-1. SAMUEL SLATER1 was born October 11, 1798 in Virginia. He was the son of
William Slater and Eleanor Claypool, who were married April 10, 1786. He was thegrandson of Thomas Slater and Sarah Williams, who were married March 10, 1760. Hewas the great grandson of Elias Slater and Sarah Bussing, who were married August30, 1718 in New Harlem, New York. He was the great great grandson of John Slaterand Abiah Gillett, who were married July 15, 1669. John died May 13, 1713 and Abiahdied November 21, 1716 in Simbury, Connecticut.Samuel came to Richland County, Ohio when he was young.
The 1820 census does not list any Samuel Slaters in Ohio. The census was probably
taken in the summer before he was married. There were four Slaters listed inRichland County: Isaac Slater in Washington Township, James Slater in PerryTownship, John Slater in Orange Township (present-day Ashland County), and WilliamSlater in Monroe Township. William was the only one having a male of Samuel's ageliving with him.
Samuel married MARGARET WILSON on November 23, 1820 in Richland County, Ohio
(marriage book 1, page 84; some county marriage indexes incorrectly say it was 1821. From Richland County records: "The state of Ohio, Richland County --- I certify thaton the 23rd of November last I joined together in matrimony Samuel Slater andMargaret Wilson both of the County aforesaid. Given under my hand and head this10th day of January AD 1821. Nicholas Flaharty").
Margaret was born December 7, 1800 in Virginia. Margaret also came to Richland
County when she was young. The 1820 census lists eight Wilson families in RichlandCounty with a female of Margaret's age living with them. The three that livedclosest to William Slater were William Wilson in Monroe Township and John Wilson andJohn Wilson Jr. in Worthington Township just to the south. John Wilson Sr. seemsthe most likely candidate for Margaret's father, since in the other two householdsMargaret would have had to be the lady of the house. John Wilson still lived inWorthington Township in the 1830 and 1840 censuses.
In the 1830 census Samuel was listed living in Worthington Township, Richland
County, Ohio with one male age 0-4 (John), two males age 5-9 (Sanford, William), onemale age 30-39 (Samuel), two females age 0-4 (Eliza and Sarah), one female age 5-9(Ellen), one female age 10-14 (Malinda), and one female age 30-39 (Margaret).
They lived there until 1834, when they moved to Williams County, Ohio, where they
lived the rest of their lives. They settled near Clarksville, a town that no longerexists, which was south of Edgerton in present-day Milford Township, DefianceCounty, along the St. Joseph River, a quarter mile south of the present county line,and two miles east of the Ohio-Indiana border. Samuel was the first settler ofMilford Township. He was the first justice of the peace for St. Joseph Township,commissioned January 1, 1836 and sworn in February 22, 1836.
Samuel made a government land purchase through the Fort Wayne, Indiana land office
on November 30, 1836.
In 1837 Samuel was listed in Milford Township on the Williams County property tax
list.
In the 1840 census Samuel was living in Milford Township, Williams County with three
males age 0-4 (Luther, Lyman, and Leonard), two males age 5-9 (Thomas and Edward),one male age 10-14 (John), two males age 15-19 (Sanford, William), one male age 40-49 (Samuel), one female age 5-9 (Sarah), one female age 10-14 (Eliza), one femaleage 15-19 (Ellen), and one female age 30-39 (Margaret). Milford Township became apart of Defiance County when it was established on March 4, 1845 from parts ofWilliams, Henry, and Paulding Counties. Samuel was listed as a voter in MilfordTownship in October 1845.
In the 1850 census (taken September 7th) Samuel was listed in St. Joseph Township,
Williams County with his wife Margaret (age 51), and children John (age 22), Sarah(age 20), Thomas (age 18), Edward (age 16), Luther (age 14), Lyman (age 12), Leonard(age 11), Samuel (age 9), and Willson (age 4), and also his daughter Eliza Tucker(age 23) with her children John (age 3, listed as born in Virginia) and Ellen (age 8months), and Susannah Slater (age 20).
Samuel died October 1, 1850 near Clarksville, Ohio. Samuel's will was dated
September 30, 1850 and accepted into probate on October 7, 1850 (Williams CountyProbate case no. 217). The will left everything to Margaret so long as she did notremarry. If she remarried, his estate was to be divided among his children. Leander C. Noble was appointed the executor. He was authorized to sell 80 acres ofland -- 40 acres in the northwest quarter of the northeast quarter of section 33 and40 acres adjoining it in the northeast quarter of the northwest quarter of section33 (which in 1864 was owned by J. T. Russell).
Leander Noble's expenses for administering the estate totaled $46.93: $3.38 for
paying clerk "as per voucher", $10.00 for S. E. Beabesle(?), $1.50 to (?) to (?)will, $10.68 for 6% on $198, $1.50 for going to Bryan to sell land, $1.50 for goingto Bryan to prove will, $1.50 for going to Bryan to pay taxes, $1.50 for notifyingjudges, $1.50 for going to Bryan twice, $1.37 for publishing the final account,$6.00 for probate judges fees, and $5.00 charges for special services asadministrator.
He paid $158.61 for debts owed to creditors: $2.00 for S. B. Gayalt(?), $8.07 for J.
Avery, 75põc for Asa Ackley, $28.80 for Daniel Farnham, $38.51 for Solomon Stough(Samuel's doctor), $31.39 for William Bratton, $5.21 for Michael Upp, $3.12 forJacob Nieghart(?), $11.05 for the county treasurer, $11.04 for Case & Foster(lawyers), $5.00 for Norman Smith, $6.71 for "amount of hay notes retained," $27.62"retained my account," $5.04 for G. C. Nobles account, 75põc for William Street, $2.00for A. W. Wilcox, and $6.19 for Jared Stoddard, administrator of the estate ofSamuel Holton.
The receipt for the money due to the Holton estate was dated October 14, 1839 and
promised payment of $3.57 in nine months by either Samuel or Jared A. Ball to JaredStoddard.
The town of Edgerton in St. Joseph Township was platted in 1858.
In the 1860 census Margaret was living in St. Joseph Township with sons Leonard,
Samuel, Wilson, and with Rose Slater (age 10).
In the 1870 census Margaret was 70 years old and living in St. Joseph Township with
her grandson Samuel Slater (age 6, son of John).
Margaret died August 9, 1877 near Clarksville, Ohio. The Williams County Probate
Index lists Margaret's will, dated August 14, 1877 (case no. 1937).
Samuel and Margaret are both buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Edgerton. They
share a stone with their son Lyman. Samuel's inscription is on the west side andgives his death date and age: "Died Oct. 1, 1850 Aged 51Y. 11M. 20D." and a quote:"There again I hope to meet you above no [one or two indistinct words] tears areshed." Margaret's inscription is on the north side and says "Wife of S. Slater Died Aug. 9, 1877 Aged 76Y. 9M. 2D."

In the 1860 census they were living in St. Joseph Township with their children Mary
(age 6), Henry (age 5), and Samuel (age 1), all born in Ohio. In the 1870 censusthey were living with their children Mary, Henry (says he was born in Illinois),Joseph (age 7, born in Illinois), and Margaret (age 2, born in Ohio).
Thomas died April 11, 1873.
Susanna later married Moses M. Case in 1874-5. Moses was born February 1832 in
Indiana. Moses had been previously married to Rebeccah -?- in 1849-50 in Indiana. She was born 1830-1 in Indiana. In the 1850 census they were living alone in RayTownship, Franklin County, Indiana and Moses was a farmer. They were not listed inIndiana in 1860.
In the 1880 census Moses and Susan were living in Union Township, Adams County, Iowa
with Moses' children Alice (age 16), Kate (age 10), and Bertha (age 8), who were allborn in Iowa, and Susan's children Elizabeth (age 26), Joseph (age 16), Maggie (age12), Nellie (age 9), and Lotta (age 7), and Moses' nephew Frank Welch (age 10). Moses was a farmer.
In the 1900 census they were living in Bazile Township, Antelope County, Nebraska
with Susan's daughter Mary. Moses was a farmer. Susan had had 8 children and 6were still living.
In the 1910 census they were living in Bazile Township with Moses' daughter Nancy

I don't think I've noticed Thomas Slater's burial place mentioned in any of your web
pages. I was at the Fort Wayne library a few days ago and I looked through thecemetery listings for Adams County, Iowa and found that he is buried in StringtownCemetery in Grant Township, in or near the town of Stringtown. I also looked at themarriage index and found no Slater marriages listed during the time that the familywould have been living in Adams County.

Jim,
I have some odd and ends of information on John Curtis and Maggie. I will attempt
to type them up here and work on a gedcom file for you later. I do not know whowrote the following but it is interesting to read.
"John Curtis (Curt) Bomar was born 20 July 1862 in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois
and died 4 Jan 1949. Maggie and Curt were married 9 December 1882. After theirmarriage, they lived for several years in Glenwood, Mills County, Iowa where theyhad two children but moved to Pierce County, Nebraska before their third child wasborn.
When Curt and Maggie lost little Nettie in 1893, the family moved by covered wagon
to the Springfield, Missouri area, where they had two more children. [They] movedback to Plainview, Pierce County, Nebraska sometime before 1904.
Curt, Maggie Bomar and their family lived on a farm for many years near Plainview,
Pierce County, Nebraska. The children all learned the hard work of farming as wellas how to keep a home and cook big meals.
Following the birth of their last child, Maggie was sickly and not able to do the
house work and care for the baby too. Eva's sister, Blanche Bomar had marriedMelzar Barnes several months before Ted was born which left most of the cooking andcleaning for Eva to do until she married in 1910. From then on it was up toGertie, who was six years younger, to take over the house work.
Sometime before 1910, Maggie and Curt separated and were eventually divorced.
Maggie continued to live in the family home in Plainview until her death 6 Aug1941. She was buried in the Old Cemetery in Plainview, Pierce County, Nebraska.
After the divorce, the family did not see much of their father. Curt was married
to VViola M. and had three boys. Ralph Harry Bomar

Curt and Viola lived in Norfolk, Madison County, Nebraska where Curt died on 4
January 1949. He was buried in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Norfolk, Madison Co.,Nebraska beside his second wife, Viola. Viola was born in 1890 and died 1974. Nodata has been received on their three sons.
Mary Blanche Bomar was born on 3 July 1885 in Glenwood, Mills Co., Iowa and died 3
May 1975. She was married to Melzar Carlos BARNES, brother of Joseph AlonzoBARNES, on 6 january 1904. They had 14 children and lived most of their marriedlife in Lincoln, [Lancaster Co.,] Nebraska where they are buried.
Margaret Elizabeth BARNES born 12 November 1904, died 13 May 1976. Married to:

Thomas Slater died one month before the birth of (5/20/1873) Lottie, leaving Susan
a widow with six living children to raise.
Susan married (Adams Co., Iowa) Reverand M.M. CASE, born 1832 and died in 1915. No
exact date is known for the marriage. To this union was born one son, Willie M.Case, born 22 Apr 1877 died 7 Jul 1879
It is thought that the Slaters moved to Ohio from Penn. It is not know how many
times or where the family moved but they eventually settled Pierce Co., Ne (1896). Burial of Susan Kile/Kyle Slater Case and Reverand M Case was in the PlainviewCemetery in a family plot. Before her death in 1915 at age 81, Susan lived for atime with her daughter, Maggie SLATER BOMAR and familyin Plainview, Pierce Co., NE
There was a Jane Anderson, Box 538, Stryker, Ohio 43557 in Oct 1994 who must have
done some research because in a letter she advises she that her husband tookpictures of the graves in Maple Grove Cemeter of "Margaret SLater and Samuel andEllen BARNES.
