Verlia's husband, Olen Twichell, was admitted to Kalamazoo State Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI in 1943. At the time of his hospitalization, Verlia sought employment outside of the home for the first time. Her first job was at a local pants factory, followed by work at a local store and then at a delicatessen. In 1946, she secured work at the Coldwater State Home in Coldwater, MI which was an orphanage and home for the mentally retarded at the time. She worked in various kitchen facilities on the campus for 26 years, retiring in 1972 at age 65.
On April 12, 1991, Verlia was reunited with her brother, Leon Dewey Smith, whom she had not seen in 62 years. The reunion took place in Vallejo, CA and was arranged by Verlia's granddaughter, Brenda Kline, who lived in Chico, CA.
