Individual:
Mary Binet's tombstone renders her name "Benet", and it gives her birthdate as "May 12, 1866" [sic]. According to family tradition, she was raised by Caroline Star, the widow of Baptiste Domingo.
In the 1880 Orleans Parish census, we find the Marigny Street household of Caroline Domingo (56 yrs old), with her adopted two daughters, Mary Bennett (age 16 yrs), and Anna Hoe (3 yrs). Each of these two girls are said to be natives of Louisiana, but their unidentified parents are natives of France.
When we look at the birth and baptismal records from Annunciation Church in New Orleans, we find a birth for Joseph Josephine Binet, legitimate daughter of Jean-Marie Binet and Josephine Lasalle, with the godparents stated to be Joseph Lasalle and Marguerite Lalas. The date of that birth is "May 12, 1865" [sic].
Again, when we look at those same birth and baptismal records from Annunciation Church, we find the 1867 baptism of Jean Gentil Lasalle, son of Joseph Lasalle and Marguerite Dallas. His godparents are named as Jean Binet and Josephine Lasalle!
I take these two acts of mutual godparental responsibility as evidence of a kinship of some type between these two families. Now, it remains to determine the precise nature of that kinship.
