[Try1.FTW] The Lawshe Cemetery is located on the hill east of Burney Lawshe's hom e t oward Water Valley. Lewis Madison served in the War of 1812 as 2nd L ieut . in Captain Barker's Company, 42n Regiment of US Infantry. Serve d in bo th Seminole Indian Wars under Gen. Andrew Jackson, and under Gene ral Patt erson in the Florida Indian war. Promoted to Captain in 1817. Mo ved to Ge orgia in 1818. Married in 1819, and moved to Water Valley, MS i n 1839. Wh en Ulysses S. Grant occupied Water Valley and burned his home , his net wo rth went from a quarter-million dollars to nothing over-nigh t. He then se t his slaves free. He was 75 years-old, but went to Virgini a and fought t hrough the Second Battle of Manassas. Lewis Lawshe moved f rom Georgia i n 1839 and bought a 640 acre farm in Water Valley, Yalobush a City, Missis sippi, owned in 1973 by R.B. Lawshe. He later moved to Sa n Marcos, Texa s to live with his daughter, Mary, and died there. A Lawsh e cemetery in W ater Valley is overgrown, and attempts to locate it in 19 98 failed. H e died at the residence of his son-in-law, Dr. Woods ... w as the oldest i nhabitant of this vicinity. Be lived to have been the o ldest member o f the Masonic fraternity in the State of Texas.
