ROBERT THORNBURG, farmer, P.O. Findlay, was born in Holmes County, Ohio, February 12, 1832, the eldest of twelve children, eight of whom are nowliving: Robert, Ruth A., Martha J., Matilda, Elizur J., Oliva F., Enos R.and Elmer. John W. and Elizur J. served in the war of the Rebellion, theformer being a lieutenant in an Indiana regiment, and sustained injuriesat the battle of Gettysburg, and the latter a member of the One Hundredand Second Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
The parents of these children were William and Beriah (Loveland) Thornburg, natives, respectively, of Pennsylvania and Ohio, the former ofwhom, a farmer and bridge builder, helped to construct the Ohio Canal. Hewas a son of Robert Thornburg, a pioneer of Holmes County, Ohio.
The subject of this sketch came to this county from Holmes County, Ohio, in October, 1860. He had taught school in early years, and had served asdeputy sheriff of Holmes County, Ohio, but during his residence in thiscounty he has devoted his attention to his farming interests, having afarm of 115 acres of land, besides an interest in the old estate. Mr.Thornburg is a justice of the peace of Allen Township, this county, whichcapacity he had filled for eighteen years.
He was married, April 19, 1860 to Miss Gennette Rockwell, daughter of P .V. Rockwell, formerly a miller of this county. Our subject and wife haveseven children: Annie B., Catherine O., Malinda, George W., Jessie, JamesE. and Mary. In politics Mr. Thornburg is a Democrat.

from Holmes Co. in Oct. 1860. He had taught school in early years, and served
as Deputy Sheriff of Holmes Co., but during his residence in this county he
has devoted his attention to his farming interests, having a farm of 115 acres

!Biographical Sketch of Robert Thornburg
by his great-grandson Robert W. Cameron
(prepared 30 Mar 1989)
Robert THORNBURG
Robert THORNBURG was born 12 February 1832 on a farm in Paint Township,
Holmes County, Ohio. Andrew Jackson was president of the United States. The
formation of Holmes County had been completed 4 January 1825. The portion of
Holmes County above the Greenville Treaty Line was originally in Wayne
County. Ohio had become a state in 1803.
ANCESTORS
Robert was the first child of William Wilkins and Beriah (LOVELAND) THORNBURG.
William Wilkins, who was born 2 December 1803 in Allegheny, PA, was the son of Robert
THORNBURG who was born in 1769 in Pennsylvania and died in Holmes County 20 January 1849.
Page 73 of Hanna's "History of Holmes County" states that William
THORNBURG was an early settler of Paint Township in 1815. (This would have
made him only 12 years old, so he obviously was with his father at the time.)
Page 131 of "Standard Atlas of Holmes County, Ohio", 1907, states that
Robert's father, William W. THORNBURG, was:
"...... a native of Allegheny, PA. He came to Holmes
County in 1815 (before Holmes County was established), and
settled on a farm 1.5 miles east of Mt. Hope."
The General Index to Deeds in Holmes County shows ten transfers of deeds
to property to Robert's father and grandfather during the period from 1823 to
1873. Robert's father and grandfather appeared on the Holmes County tax
records in 1825. On 20 Sept 1827 Robert (the Elder) received a deed to
property from President John Quincy Adams. This land was directed to be sold
"......by the acts of Congress entitled 'An act providing for the Sale of the
Lands of the United States in the territory northwest of the Ohio above the
mouth of the Kentucky rivers'".
Beriah LOVELAND was born in Ohio in 1812, the first child of Elizur
LOVELAND, who was born in 1784 in Vermont.
THE HOLMES COUNTY YEARS
Brown's "History of Hancock County", 1886, page 656, states that Robert
had taught school in early years and served as a deputy sheriff. The 1850
census shows Robert living with his parents and siblings in Paint Township.
Since the 1860 census also shows him and his new bride living with his
parents it appears that Robert lived with his parents until he and Gennette
moved to Hancock County.
On 1 September 1851, the twin brother of Oliva J. THORNBURG, Wilkey
THORNBURG, died at the age of five--just 20 days before the birth of Robert's
second youngest brother, Enos R. THORNBURG.
Robert's youngest sibling, Elmer D. THORNBURG, was born in 1859 when
Robert was 27 years old. This was just about a year before Robert was
married.
MARRIAGE
At the age of 28, Robert married Gennette Osborn ROCKWELL, the daughter
of Parish Villers and Ann Elizabeth (FOREMAN) ROCKWELL on 19 April 1860 in
Millersburg. As stated above, the 1860 census would indicate that the new
couple temporarily resided with Robert's parents.
MOVE TO HANCOCK COUNTY
In October of 1860, six months after their marriage, Robert and
Gennette moved to Hancock County.
CIVIL WAR YEARS
Two of Robert's younger brothers were Civil War veterans. Captain John
W. THORNBURG was a veteran of several bloody battles and of Sherman's march
to the sea. He was wounded in the chest during the Battle of Gettysburg when
his company attacked Culp's Hill. He recovered, and went on to participate
in several other campaigns. Elizur J. THORNBURG was a private in the 102nd
Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
The record does not tell, but Robert was probably exempt from service
since he had a family and was 29 years old when his two brothers joined. The
remainder of his brothers were too young to serve.
CHILDREN
Their first child, Annie B. THORNBURG, was born in Hancock County in
1862. A total of nine children, including our ancestor, Jessie THORNBURG
(b. 30 September 1871) were born there by 4 January 1878. The last child
lived for only ten days.
MIDDLE AGE
In Brown's history, 1866, (mentioned above) he states that:
"....., but during his residence in this county he has
devoted his attention to his farming interests, having
a farm of 115 acres of land, besides an interest in the
old estate. Mr. Thornburg is a justice of the peace of
Allen Township, this county, which capacity he has filled
for eighteen years.................In politics Mr. Thornburg
is a Democrat" 5
G. A. Eberhart, C. E., "Illustrated Historical Atlas of Hancock County,
Ohio", H. H. Hardesty, publisher, Chicago, Illinois, 1875, page 44, shows
Allen Township, and shows the 115 acres that Robert owned in the Southeast
quarter of Section 30.
DECEASED
At the age of 57, on Thursday, 3 October 1889, Robert died of Bright's
disease. In addition to his wife, he was survived by: Annie B. THORNBURG,
Catherine E. FOLTZ, Sarah Malinda WOMMER, George W. THORNBURG, Jessie,
James THORNBURG, and Mollie (Mary) THORNBURG. All of the survivors listed
Findlay as their post office except for Sarah M. Wommer who listed North
Baltimore.
An obituary in the October 17, 1889 edition of the Millersburg, OH, "The
Farmer" stated:
"Robert Thornburg who has been living on the Dan Stough
farm on Port Clinton Road, died there last Thursday from
Bright's disease. Aged about 58 years. The funeral will
probably occur Saturday. Findlay Courier, October 11,
1899. Deceased was well known in this section, having
been raised in Paint Township, this county"
The death certificate shows Robert's residence as being in Marion
Township. He was buried in Bechtel Cemetery, Allen Township. It would be
approximately 29 years before Gennette's body would also be buried there.
Interment records document her burial even though there is no inscription on
the stone. The probate of his estate lists $1366.75 in personal property and
$11,042.58 in real estate. The probate also shows:
Said Executor Administrator exhibits the following property

appraised the same being said not to belong to said deceased
