There was no probate on the estate of Andrew Friend who died a few months later, before 21 April 1817 when a survey was done for his four heirsJoseph, Sarah, Levina, and Jonas Friend. They were now possessed of 100acres in what is now Braxton County "including the place they live on...on Ben's Run." (45) If Eleanor survived her husband she is not found asthe head of a family in 1820, and no second marriage has been found forher. On 24 October 1850 Levisa Friend of Kanawha County, and Jonas Friendtogether with Jonas and Thomas CANTER of Mason County, Virginia, joinedtogether to sell this 100 acres to Samuel S. Williams. (46)
Of the four children of Andrew Friend named in 1817 only Jonas and his sister Sarah have been traced further. Jonas, the first born, was livingin 1850 a farmer aged 47 with his wife Tempy and a large family ofchildren in Mason County. They apparently moved to adjoining JacksonCounty, West Virginia, but in 1880 he and Temperance were in MiltonTownship, Jackson County, Ohio. In 1880 Jonas Friend's occupation isreported as "digs ore"-a hard life for an elderly man. (47) Neither he orTemperance (nor any of their children) are found buried in MiltonTownship. His sister Sarah apparently married the James Canter who was
head of a family in 1840 in Mason County, and it was her two eldest sons and heirs, orphans, who conveyed their interest in the tract on KanawhaRun in 1850. Jonas and Thomas CANTER were both enumerated in 1880 inUnion District, Jackson County, West Virginia
The 1900 census of his son, James, gives place of birth of Jonas as Ohio.
MARRIAGE: by Rev. Tobias Mat(t)ox in the home of George Washington Wilson.

Wounded at battle of Lynchburg Va. He was shot in the right thigh on June 17,
1864, in the Battle of Lynchburg. Prior to that he had contracted "billious
fever" (typhoid) at Cawley Bridge, Va., in June or July 1862.
He spent some time in hospital at Galliapolis,OH, when he was unfit for
duty. Discharged Cumberland, MD, 1865. Jonas believes that his ulcers of his
left leg were result of the billious fever. His left leg (3-6 inches above
ankle) had open sores, that would swell, emit foul odors, and green pus. When
his leg would swell he would have chills, be lame. At times, the sores were
lanced. He had varicose veins & rheumatism. His right leg (gunshot wound) was
occasionally sore. The ball was lodged permanently in his leg. Jonas said he
thought he was more disabled than a man with his leg off below the knee. He
repeatedly applied for increased pensions, and he was repeatedly rejected.
Several times, however, increases were granted. When examined in 1879, he was
6'1" weighed 157#. He developed a hump in his back--dorsal vertebrae. He
shrank to 5", 10.5". He was described as a strictly temperate man--a man of
temperate habits. On March 22, 1895, he went into a coma and died of blood
poisoning as a result of the chronic ulcer of the left leg. Another account
said that a clot must have reached his brain from his leg. Original allowance
May, 1882, gunshot wound of right thigh--$2/mo. 1883 pension roll Vol. V, p.
33 209185. He could not write.
He served 24 Feb 1862 to 20 Feb 1865 in Co. F, 9th Regiment WV Infantry (Capt. Chase's Co.),
also served in Company J, 1 Vest Virginia Vet. Inf.
!PENSION: His Invalid Pension application number was 263460 and the certificate
number was 209185. The Widow's Pension application number was 638283 and the
certificate number was 441974.
